  • A peaceful haven in the middle of the Howardian Hills
  • A 20-minute drive to Malton and half an hour to the North York Moors
  • Communal kitchen, firepit and chimenea; access to footpaths
What a place to be – in the middle of the Howardian Hills, with fresh herbs growing in pots all around and a chimenea and a large firepit to cook on (or huddle around to stay warm). Its owners describe Roma Rose as a calm haven – and it is indeed just that, with a hammock resting under an ash tree, heaps of green space and gorgeous views of the countryside. Those Howardian Hills slopes and pastures make for some excellent walking, and there are spectacular footpaths to take locally. Stop by the village shop, a mile away, to pick up something to nibble on as you do your rounds of the hills. Later on, you shouldn't go hungry either, as there are a handful of pubs within around 15 minutes’ drive of the site. There are many more hikes to be undertaken in the North York Moors National Park, half an hour’s drive to the north of the site. It may be just as tempting to stay at Roma Rose, however, as it’s very much peaceful (it is a private field tucked away from noise). There’s also no light pollution, so you're likely to be treated to some spectacular stargazing on a clear night. Communal kitchen facilities are on hand for those who want to prepare their own basic brews and meals. The kitchen hut has a fridge, cooking utensils and crockery. Other handy facilities on site are a composting loo and a warm shower.

Rose bell tent

Liked The area was beautiful, lovely open space and so peaceful and quiet with a relaxed atmosphere. The bell tent was lovely and comfy, clean and warm. The shared kitchen was well stocked and came in handy as we couldn't cook outside due to the rain. Our host Grania was so helpful and friendly. Even the wind and rain couldn't spoil our night away. We would definately return.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Gypsy caravan

Liked Fulfilling a childhood dream from my Famous Five and Kizzy/Diddakoi days and I wasn't disappointed. The site is tranquil and the sky like a planetarium. The toilet and shower are far better than they sound! We found everything we needed in the shared kitchen and the host family were lovely and very helpful, as were the friendly staff at the village shop/tea shop, who provided us with the best sandwiches ever and even ginger beer! Such a great place we stayed on an extra night.

Disliked We didn't dislike anything, but wish we'd had more information about what was available and nearby facilities

Rose bell tent

Liked An absolutely lovely idyllic place. So peaceful and quiet. Grania and her mum made us feel so welcome. Very helpful and responsive throughout and friendly on arrival. There is everything you need for your stay in the communal kitchen area. The outdoor shower and composting toilet is quirky but you get used to it and certainly does not spoil your stay. The tent was warm, cosy and comfortable with the added bonus of electric. The area is fantastic for walking, sightseeing or you can just relax on site. We will definitely be returning. Thankyou for letting us enjoy the day with Mouse. Such a lovely dog. 😊

Local attractions

Self-proclaimed foodie? Italian chef Antonio Carluccio declared the market town of Malton (20 minutes’ drive) Yorkshire’s ‘food town’, and it has stuck ever since. It’s likely you’ll soon understand why once you start visiting the artisan food shops, cookery school and – if you’re lucky with timings – the monthly market. Many have nice things to say about Castle Howard (10 minutes) too. The home of the Howard family for over 300 years, the historic house is very extensive, with lakes, fountains, statues and temples in the grounds. Yorkshire Lavender (20 minutes’ walk) may not have that same regal atmosphere, but what it is abundant in is purple lavender gardens. The farm stretches over 60 acres of hills, well worthy of a picture or two. Families may want to check out Flamingo Land Resort (half an hour’s drive) too. It’s not just a zoo, although the flamingos, iguana, wallaby and African lion will surely pique the interest of some. It’s also a theme park; dare to try a round on Mumbo Jumbo or Sik, the two biggest rollercoasters.
