  • Luxury lotus dome tents with kingsize beds near historic Whitby
  • Beaches, Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick and Whitby all 15 minutes' drive
  • Woodfired stoves, private shower room and gazebo with a kitchen/fridge
This is a luxurious glamping spot in the North Yorkshire hamlet of Littlebeck – Alum House Glamping certainly knows how to sort outdoor breaks in style. On this secluded site, each luxury lotus dome bell tents is pitched in a peaceful corner of the grounds, and none are overlooked, so your luxury retreat really is totally private… The tents, which are insulated for extra warmth, have electricity and are heated by log-fired stoves (with log packs available on site for an extra charge). Linen is provided for the kingsize beds with luxury mattresses, and the private shower facilities are close to the tents. Washing-up facilities are attached to the shower block, and there’s a microwave, kettle and fridge there too. Other considerate touches include a porch to keep your stuff dry (this being Yorkshire), a mini gas fridge and outdoor kitchen with cooking equipment including a crockery box. And in the evening, you can all keep cosy around the firepit, with an inbuilt barbecue. And finally, a couple of house rules: small dogs are allowed (for a small daily charge) but must be kept on a lead at all times as the owners have chickens. Please do not allow them inside the tents if they are wet, as they're likely to mark the canvas if they shake themselves down.

Local attractions

Historic Whitby (15 minutes’ drive) is home to dramatic clifftop abbey ruins, excellent fish and chip shops and loads of indie stores selling jet jewellery – you can also go scavenging on the beach for fossils, or take a boat trip to go whale watching or sea fishing. The dog will be happy scampering over the pet-friendly beach at Robin Hood’s Bay (15 minutes), where there are lots of rock pools to splash around in too. Further inland, Pickering (30 minutes) is the departure point for steam-train rides on the North York Moors Railway. You can also have a Harry Potter moment at Goathland (15 minutes), where the railway station doubled for Hogsmeade Station. In the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, you might like to nose around riverside villages like Glaisdale (25 minutes) and Beck Hole (15 minutes), scale Roseberry Topping (45 minutes) or get on long-distance trails like the Coast to Coast (five minutes to join it at Falling Foss) for spectacular moorland views.
