  • Peaceful riverbank site on the edge of North York Moors National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Scarborough and beaches, 20 minutes from Filey
  • Great spot for anglers, with river fishing on site
Casting about for a peaceful holiday? Hook yourself a spot for a stay at Riverside Caravan Park, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the North Yorkshire seaside resort of Scarborough. Down a quiet country lane, and on the banks of the river Derwent, this is a top site for finding a bit of calm: it's the kind of place where you can listen to the river as it flows by, hear the sounds of the countryside drifting across the fields from neighbouring farms, and maybe nab a patch of riverbank for some fishing. Music fans might gravitate towards the Scarborough Fair Collection, 15 minutes away, while others might prefer visits to the town’s beach, aquarium, Italian gardens, open-air theatre or golf courses. Want to steer clear of the seaside entirely? Turn instead to North York Moors National Park, less than five minutes from base, for hiking and biking trails, scenic towns and villages, and some fab heritage railways. Guests keen on keeping getaways low-key and low-on-travel are well served here. The site’s about half a mile from the village of East Ayton, where basic supplies can be sorted in the small convenience store, hungers can be satisfied in the restaurant or chip shop, and thirsts can be quenched in the pub. East Ayton’s also where those of a more exploratory disposition should go for local buses to the coast. Back on site, there are ladies' and gents' loos, electric showers, and two taps for fresh drinking water.

What customers say

This campsite offers a peaceful rural escape with friendly staff and lovely countryside views, including resident sheep. Its location is praised for being close to Scarborough and other coastal towns. However, facilities, particularly toilets and showers, are frequently described as basic, in need of improvement, and sometimes suffer from blockages or lack of cleanliness. Muddy conditions, especially after rain, are also a common concern, impacting access and the overall experience.

Liked Everything,
The peace,
The quiet,
The tranquility,
The animals
The fact that your left to your own devices which is what we like

After our stay at arosa a cpl of miles down the road came to end we wanted to extend but no space but we came across this Gem of a place, if you like peace, quiet and nothing else bar the odd animal in adjacent fields then this is the place for you, after reading the reviews we were dubious but decided to chance it and boy are we glad, it's a very basic site with no clubhouse, no shop but exactly what you need, showers, toilets, chemical waste disposal, and EHU, which suits us to the ground (mature couple with dog), Camping as it should, at one with nature)

We booked via pitchup and upon confirmation were greeted with an email from a very nice lady it turns out Lizzie who runs the site telling us to pitch up where we feel appropriate and if any problems give her call (which there wasn't) and she'll pop up to see us once settled which she duly did, and yes there is no reception or anybody to greet you but that's what we like , maybe not to everyone's taste but that's how it is, everybody arrives at different times so IMO the poor lady can't be expected to be up and down at the beck and call of us horrible campers, 😁

Upon arrival I could see that a freshly gravelled driveway in was not what was expected judging by the reviews on here so obviously money has been spent since the previous reviewers, the toilets and showers were very clean 🫧 AND THERES MIRRORS, lots of them, the lady Lizzie was round twice a day to sort them and the rubbish and tend to her flock , after speaking with her there are plans to get the unsightly vans moved on which is a plus point,

With us given free reign as where to pitch we decided upon our back caravan window looking out over the animal field and what a sight it is waking up to two silly goats outside your window,

If you like just nothing but peace and quiet and camping how it should be then this is the site for you and the animals are simply a bonus ,(donkeys, pony's, goats and sheep are what we saw) the wife in her element topping up the water bowls and stroking them

The grass was trimmed nicely and it's a very flat site (once you get up and down the small ford, take it steady if with caravan)

There's a water tap and EHU all around the site so what more do you need, and enough space if you did bring kids for them to kick a ball , it's a steady walk to the local chippy or well stocked spar although if wanting fish and chips I'd go a cpl o mile down rd to seamer fisheries as they are divine 👌🏻and there's East Ayton cricket club 5 mins walk away if you did fancy a drink although I do believe they don't allow dogs,

Ideally based to explore the whole of the Yorkshire coast with Scarborough 10 mins away Filey about 15/20 añd Bridlington about half hour, even Whitby only about 30/40 mins, and if going inland Mathewson's in Thornton le dale 25 mins along with Pickering etc, basically everything is within say half hour,

Totally enjoyed our stay doing nothing but relaxing and being carefree not worrying about the daily grind and listening to birdsong and spotting herons and will definitely be back again

Won't let me upload photos but feel free to look on my tiktok channel danreilly007 for a video review or put riverside camping Scarborough into the tiktok search bar

Disliked If I was being very picky the scrappy vans in the adjacent compound (albeit hidden)

Also being a tight Yorkshireman id have liked the price a little cheaper

Electric grass pitch

Liked Nice little quiet site. Booked without reading the reviews and must say it seems all the bad things commented on have been addressed. Toilet block was very clean and looks to have newly fitted showers. Could smell wet paint. Plenty of room and good ground that takes a peg. There were some ground leveling going on but it didn't affect our stay.

Liked Good location.

Disliked Basically this site should be shut down! The toilets were blocked on day one and unusable. The staff didn't really care (although we only saw them once). No hot water to wash up. The showers were never cleaned and there were no fire points around. Basically it's just a field and that's it. No facilities. Booking last minute this was the only site with availability, and now I know why! Will never go again.

Liked We had a lovely stay at the riverside campsite, especially because of its close location to Scarborough,
Filey and Pickering.

The campsite was well facilitated with toilets, showers, electric hookup and rubbish disposal.

There were about 5 free roaming sheep on the campsite which were fun to spot (although we found them scary at night lol).

Toilets and showers were relatively clean for a grass campsite (bits of mud and grass occasionally brought in by campers but couldn’t really be helped).

Owners of this campsite were very polite and helpful via text.

Thank you for our stay, we hope to visit again :)

Disliked One problem we had was the toilets would get blocked up fairly regularly but we were not sure what was causing this.

Local attractions

Sticking close by to start with, anyone who simply can’t get enough of fishing can make the five-minute drive to Wykeham Lakes fishery to land trout, carp, perch and bream, while those who are happiest out in nature should pay a visit to Burton Riggs Nature Reserve (10 minutes' drive) for wanders and birdwatching. Further afield, travels to the coast come highly recommended. It’s 20 minutes from base to the coastal town of Filey, where there are beaches to sprawl or stroll on, plus a museum, an animal park and birdwatching areas. The town’s also the start of the 110-mile Cleveland Way walking trail. A 40-minute drive up the coast leads to Whitby, a coastal town that inspired major elements of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Head this way for more sandy stretches, the spectacularly spooky Whitby Abbey and (during well-timed stays) the Whitby Goth Weekend. If Whitby Abbey inspired an interest in seeing more stunning old buildings, there are plenty nearby to choose from: it’s 35 minutes to Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall, 40 minutes to the marvellous Castle Howard (featured in Brideshead Revisited) and 50 minutes to Rievaulx Abbey.
