  • Spacious pitches near Pickering in the North York Moors National Park
  • Whitby, Dalby Forest and Castle Howard within 35 minutes' drive
  • Small café and luxury bathrooms on site; dogs and kids welcome
On the southern edge of North York Moors National Park – and a geographically sensible choice for those intent on a hiking holiday – Bank Top Camping is a family-friendly site a 15-minute drive from Pickering. Woodland walks can be accessed directly from the site, but it’s not just the ramblers who find the location convenient: watersports enthusiasts can reach the North Sea coast in less than one hour, with places like Whitby (40 minutes’ drive) and Scarborough (50 minutes) among the top local choices. Spacious pitches sit on the edge of a large field fringed by tall, leafy trees, and they come with electric hook-ups and views over the Vale of Pickering, plus oodles of room for children to run around and play games. The kids might also enjoy making friends with the resident animals; speaking of which, while dogs are welcome guests at Bank Top Camping, they should be kept on a lead while on site. A small café sells hot drinks, locally made ice cream and a selection of home-baked goods (mmm… muffins), as well as honey produced on site by hard-working bees that you can watch at the fascinating Observation Hive. If you’re into making your own food, there’s a communal fridge freezer to store any essentials, and a sheltered washing-up area with plenty of hot water. Other facilities include a toilet block with luxury touches such as underfloor heating (blissful, on a parky Yorkshire morning), hot-water showers and hairdryers. There is also a laundry room with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

This is a highly recommended, well-maintained, and peaceful campsite with exceptionally friendly and helpful owners. Visitors praise the spotless and modern facilities, including showers and toilets, and spacious pitches. The on-site cafe serving coffee and ice cream is a popular addition. Electric optional grass tent or campervan pitch (two person)

Liked What can I say other than what an amazing little hidden gem this one is. Bargain price and such a very well kept site. Owners are absolutely fantastic, the lady was extremely polite, can get a cracking little coffee or tea in the morning and pay by card if needed. A choice of excellent tasting ice creams and milkshakes available. Showers and toilets spotlessly clean. Don’t pass this site up it’s little treasure of a place.

Perfect stay!

Thanks you

Electric optional grass pitch (large)

Liked Lovely site near Dalby Forest with spacious pitches. Lots of grass space in middle to play games with kids. Spotless shower and toilet facilities and a lovely little ice cream shop in reception. We would definitely return

Disliked Only thing I can say would improve it is more showers. As there are only 2 there was a bit of a queue.

Local attractions

Reward the kids for not complaining (much) during your hikes through the moors by taking them to Flamingo Land Resort (20 minutes’ drive), with thrill rides and family-friendly attractions, plus a zoo with big cats, primates and farmyard animals. Or head to Dalby Forest (25 minutes), where a Go Ape park has treetop adventure courses for all ages. A spectacular country mansion in the equally spectacular setting of the Howardian Hills National Landscape, Castle Howard (35 minutes) might look familiar from TV dramas such as ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Victoria’. Elegant interiors include the Chapel, with its opulent pre-Raphaelite decoration by the likes of William Morris. Stroll around the harbour at Whitby (40 minutes), grabbing fish and chips or embarking on a coastal cruise to see seals and (if you’re lucky) dolphins. Back on dry land, climb the 199 Steps leading to the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, which are said to have inspired Bram Stoker to write ‘Dracula’.
