  • Peaceful farm with pond and walking paths
  • Farm shop, gift shop, café and furniture for sale
  • Toilet and shower blocks with disabled access
Keep the kids busy at Thorpe Farm Centre near Co. Durham's Barnards Castle... if dipping and nature spotting at the peaceful pond doesn't sway them, seeing the animals in their paddocks or the many walking paths straight from the site surely will. The farm also has its 18th-century Peel House, home to a gift shop, a café serving breakfast and Sunday lunch, a farm shop selling fresh local produce including bread, milk, bacon, sausages and eggs, and – rather unusual but very fab – a reclamation barn selling furniture, antiques and collectables. Facilities include toilet and shower blocks with disabled access; fresh water and a chemical disposal unit. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on leads while on site.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Friendliness of staff upon checkin and during visiting the shop and restaurant. Children's play area next to the restaurant area is a nice play area.
Toilet area next to pitches very clean and efficient.
Friendly and quiet site.
Kids enjoyed themselves on the tyre swings in the middle of the site.
Only thing i that was a problem for us was our hook up lead didnt reach the electric as it was in the spot next door but one to our pitch, but the staff offered an extension to lend if we needed it.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Modern facilities: toilets, showers, washing up area etc

Disliked: Size of pitches was smaller than advertised on pitch up. This made setting up a little trickier than it should have been

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Easy access to the pitch. Staff very helpful explained everything we needed to know and contact numbers (we didn't need them haha ) site was in a good location, we where sceptical after reading comments about the noise of the traffic but we never noticed it. I suppose people complaing must want total silence. Toilet and shower block very clean. We would definitely recommend this site.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Very clean and beautiful site. Farm shop amazing with jams and biscuits , all sorts, and we bought some amazing home made scones. The young guy serving was friendly , very polite , and had a little chat . The dogs loved the big open field as no one was there so they ran mad to burn energy .

Disliked: Loud traffic noise as was near road. We don't mind the noise as we like white noise , bring ear plugs ... sorted .

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The facilities were spotless the cleaner was so friendly and chatty.
Animals were so cute.
Shop staff super friendly

Local chip shop is amazing!

Disliked: The showers were freezing warmed up when ready to get out, make sure door is closed as the water goes literally all over the floor so be prepared for the cold water to take you breath away.
Use the disabled as it has temperature change esp for kiddies.

Nothing much onsite for older kids but they are pretty hard to entertain once they hit teenage years

Pizza night- we booked but didn’t end up going we went over to the shop for a price list we are a family of 6. Each pizza base was 9.95 topping each varied between £1-2.50 ham pineapple etc was 2.50 per topping we worked it out about £15 per pizza even for the younger kids £90 for pizzas we found to be a lot! We ended up going to the chip shop and buying mum and dads too for £50 that’s 8 meals!! And still saved

Electric- pay when we arrive with a £2 deposit when having kids we had the heating on low during the night we used £13.50 on our stay we arrived Friday 2.30 and left 9.45 on Sunday again this was expensive everything kept tripping out when trying to cook was a nightmare.

Road noise is horrific literally your backing into the road. A66
We won’t be back sadly

Liked: have to pay electric separate works out around £5 per night , advertising free making pizzas daughter booked it then when she looked closer into it cost £10 for base then £2.50 per topping she has, 4 boys which would of been expensive so be careful when booking these type of things , animals were nice to see pigs deers goats etc , you can hear traffic noise from touring pitches which kept me awake even with ear plugs in ,we won't be going back

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Easy access. Informative, helpful friendly staff. Shower block warm and very clean. Great for smaller kids. They loved the park, rope swings and feeding the animals.

Disliked: Constant road noise, heavy vehicles throughout the night as its right on the A66. Then we were sited closest to the road.

Local attractions

Thorpe Farm Centre's location in Co. Durham bordering North Yorkshire on the A66 puts it in nifty position for days out of all kinds by foot, pedal or car. If you want to investigate the surrounding area by foot, a shortcut to the A66 gives access to many more walking paths as well as cycling trails; a map is available at the site shop with details. The seventeenth century country house of Rokeby Park is just around the corner from the farm, and it's about ten minutes' drive to Barnards Castle, an old market town with pubs, shops, restaurants, the Bowes Museum and its castle high on a rock above the River Tees. The farm is nine miles west of Scotch Corner in the countryside of Teesdale and 15 miles from Richmond in the Yorkshire Dales. Raby Castle, Eggleston Hall, High Force Waterfall (England’s highest, foam fans) and Middleton in Teesdale are also within driving distance.
