Hardstanding touring pitch

  • Fully serviced pitches with access to paid fishing lakes
  • Around 30 minutes’ drive from Warwick, Birmingham and Leicester
  • Café, wheelchair accessible facilities, parent and baby washroom
Would waking up and walking just a few feet for a spot of fishing be something of a holiday win for you? And how about finding that around 30 minutes by car from Warwick, Birmingham and Leicester? At Makins Lakes, in the village of Bramcote and 10 minutes’ drive from the Warwickshire town of Nuneaton, your pitch won’t just be close to a peaceful peg, you’ll also have a long list of Heart of England holiday highlights close by. Of course, the lakes on site aren’t just for the enjoyment of anglers. Being by the water brings a peaceful feel to all the pitches. There are views over the Warwickshire countryside too, but this isn’t a middle-of-nowhere kind of place. Each pitch is hooked up with electric and water access points. The shower and toilet block have accessible areas for disabled guests and there’s also a family-friendly parent and baby washroom. There’s an on-site café and bait shop and if you can’t bear to leave the lakeside, they’ll even deliver food out to you so you need not stop fishing all day. When you’re ready to rest your rod for a bit, it’s a 25-minute drive to catch a bit of culture in Coventry (UK City of Culture 2021) or 40 minutes to Stratford-upon-Avon, the must-see town for all things Shakespeare.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Quiet site, plenty of fishing lakes

Disliked Washing and toilet facilities weren’t the cleanest. Full of spider webs and spiders that had been there for some time.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We've stayed twice now, only for one night each time. The campsite it's self is a field so not much to say there, it's exactly as we expected it to be. The fishing lakes are great, we managed to catch on both visits. The shop is stocked with a hood variety of items, and great tackle shop.

Disliked Unfortunately I was less impressed with the toilet situation, if you go non electric you will have a bit of a walk to go to the toilet, which is a bit of annoying especially when you need to go early hours of the morning. There's 5/6 toilets in the ladies and some showers but that's it for the whole campsite. This last visit I wasn't too impressed with the state of them and lack of toilet roll. My partner too hasn't been too impressed with the mens toilets as only two toilets availed again for the whole campsite. Really do need another toilet block preferably in the non electric field.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The lakes were lovely, well maintained. The on-site shop was great and had all necessities if you forgot or wanted extras like led holla hoop and toys.

Disliked The facilities left a lot to be desired, when we arrived the toilets and showers where okay, but by the time we left two days later, they were horrendous, the mens where blocked and disgusting for an evening and morning (with over 100 people or more on-site approx 8 toilets with all mens blocked is not great), the ladies had one out of 5 toilets with toilet paper, with tampon wrappers etc lying around overnight and for most of the following day, we notified the shop but they only managed to unblock the males toilets did not bother to clean toilets and showers.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked There’s a lot of things to do in the campsite and around, such as the golf range, walks, fishing etc.
The pitching of the tents is easy enough. It’s a first come first serve and not designated spots.

Disliked As per some other reviews, the toilet and shower facilities are gross and not cleaned nearly enough. The men’s washrooms were completely blocked and the smell was noticeable if standing outside the facility. The washing up area is also not the nicest and again not cleaned well.
You can buy water from the reception but non of the taps around the campsite were working so we had to get it from the washing up station, which isn’t the nicest taste. The lady manning the reception wasn’t very accommodating in telling us where the loos, water etc. was. We had to ask several questions to get any answers.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Lovely site, nice shop and tackle shop, very peaceful at times.
Loved the cafe too!
Will go back, but not on a bank holiday.

Enjoyable weekends fishing for both of us.

Disliked The toilet block was unusable as all toilets were blocked - there didn't seem to be many staff around either to report this too.

It seemed to be quite cramped, maybe because it was Bank Holiday.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Really enjoyed our stay here.

We were very close to the showers/toilets. There are only 2 showers but it was available whenever i needed it.

Lots of lakes to fish on, which you are allocated on the day.

Close to another fishery called Burton Farm Cafe where you could go wild swimming and take your own paddle board.

The workers were very friendly and stopped to have a chat and give information about the local area.

Disliked Near a very busy motorway so can be quite noisy at night.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Plenty of room on a big, motorcycle friendly camping field - could park the bikes next to the tents.
Loved being able to have a fire-pit, the shop sells wood and fire-pits can be hired.
Lovely friendly people and a nice little reception and shop which sells a selection of useful bits and pieces that you might need (such as more wine!).
Toilet / Shower blocks were clean and warm with the best showers we've ever found on a campsite! Nice big cubicle with both rain shower head and hose fittings and plenty of hot water at a decent pressure :-)
Good to have the Cafe on site for a great good value cooked breakfast.

Disliked Only two showers and two toilet cubicles which meant a bit of a queue at times.
M69 close by so just fyi there can be a bit of background traffic noise.

Local attractions

If you’re in the mood for a quiet picnic or woodland stroll, Coombe Abbey Country Park (15 minutes’ drive) is a 500-acre parkland made for whiling away a day outdoors. There’s also a play area, zip lining and climbing forest if the family’s up for an active day. Or you could always try out the angling here too if your break really is all about fishing. Entertaining the kids shouldn’t be too tricky around these parts either. Immerse yourself fully in the medieval world of dungeons, knights and princesses, jousting and falconry with a visit to Warwick Castle (35 minutes). Or scream if you wanna go faster at Drayton Manor Theme Park, home to rollercoasters, Thomas Land and a 15-acre zoo. Animal antics of all kinds are also order of the day at Twycross Zoo (30 minutes).
