  • Relaxed family-run site in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley
  • Near Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape
  • Space to play, huge grassy pitches and close to a forest
Picture your next break among green space, woodland walks and cycling trails in the peaceful woodland setting of the famed Forest of Dean, on the edge of the market town of Coleford… You'll get a warm welcome at this relaxed, family-run and family-friendly park, in an area surrounded by ancient castles and abbeys, smashing scenery and miles of waymarked walking and biking trails. As Greenacres Campsite is right in the middle of the Forest of Dean, across the road from a woodland and within walking distance of the River Wye, it's in a good spot for fishing, bike rides and long woodland strolls, as well as easy access to attractions such as Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape at Mallards Pike Lake. Set in a field that stretches across two acres within an 11-acre smallholding, pitches are spacious, level and grassy, and the park is surrounded by huge mature trees that provide good shade and shelter from the elements. Kids should be kept very well occupied at the excellent playground less than five minutes' stroll away, where there's also plenty of space to for ball games and dog walking. Barbecues and campfires are allowed: most handy if you land yourself a fish or two in the Wye or decide to pick up a few sausages in Coleford… Otherwise, there's a good traditional English pub in Newland, a short walk away, and another in Staunton within a 30-minute woodland ramble. The wider local area has plenty of pubs, restaurants and takeaways (many of which are happy to deliver straight to the site).

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: This site is a little gem, well laid out with big pitches, a lovley gate to a field to run your dogs, owners were friendly to facilities spotless

Disliked: The road going up to the site is quite a slope and very bumpy, our caravan grounded on it twice,
There is a new on being laid soon
You pay for electric hook up, but also pay by the what you use

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: You definitely should not have been charged twice - I can only apologise. This has been refunded and occurred due to teething problems we had last week with a new metering system. This has now been rectified.
The track has taken a beating this last month due to heavy lorries using it during the installation of our new water treatment plant. We have made repairs this week and look forward to the new track being installed.
That said, we are super pleased you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back! Thank you.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Clean showers and toilet block. Quiet location. Clean site. No road noise. Respectful guests, quiet site.

Disliked: Workmen creating new pitches early in the morning. Electricians working on site disconnected our electric hook up on our van mid-morning with no warning or discussion. Not ideal.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback!
I’m really sorry that the early start from our contractors disrupted what was otherwise a peaceful stay but I am really pleased that you would still recommend us and would return.
The work you experienced was the final stage of landscaping after the installation of a £100k water treatment plant—part of our long-term commitment to becoming more sustainable and carbon neutral. We are now exploring the recycling of the treated water to create a reed bed and wildlife area, which we hope will enhance both the environment and guest experience in the future.
The work had originally been scheduled to be completed before we opened for the season, but unfortunately the dig uncovered unexpected rock, which caused delays and meant that the final stages overran into our opening period.
That said, the early start and lack of notice before your electric hook-up was disconnected for replacement were not acceptable, and I completely understand how frustrating that must have been. I’ve spoken to the team to ensure better communication and more considerate timing going forward, although the good news is that all work is now fully complete.
We are excited for guests to enjoy the improvements in a peaceful and well-kept setting and would love to welcome you back in the future!

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: This is a well kept site, managed by very friendly people. The toilet and shower facilities were immaculately clean and warm. Disposal points for waste also well maintained. There are plenty of electric hook up points too.
The onsite shop also provides hot food options, though we didn't try these.
There is an easy footpath to Coleford, where we found a lovely micro pub, with real ales and live music ; which made for a fun evening

Disliked: Nothing really... The site access road is currently a little uneven, but a new access road is being built., so this will soon be rectified.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The hard standing pitches had allot of room and were very neat. The fire pit hire was also very affordable and good.

Disliked: The park (play area) wasn't suitable for young children and is small anyway. The showers didn't have family sized cubicles, so having a young boy and a girl made it hard work showeing them both without having my wife with me, Also the cubicles are very small and tight to shower one child let alone two. The showers also only seemed to rum for about 15-20 seconds before turning off. Not a big issue i suppose but personally I'd like it if I could be longer.

From the manager: Hi David
We do have a family room which would have been perfect for your family but sadly it is temporarily out of action. It will be up and running again in the next couple of days - sorry for the inconvenience.
You are absolutely right about the play area - there is little play equipment for smaller children at present. We have bought some extra equipment but have not had the chance to install it yet. There is a brilliant play park next door to us though, in the Angus Buchanan Recreation Park - it has lots of play equipment and is suitable for all ages as well as being inclusive play. Sadly it does not appear that we made you aware of this which is a real shame as the Park does back onto us.
I am grateful for your feedback though. It will give me the kick I need to sort out the family room and make a plan for the play area. Thank you.
I am pleased that you would still recommend us though and do hope you will stay another time. We are central to all the activities in the area and will address the items mentioned.

Would recommend The Dog House in Coleford for craft beer and live music at weekends, very dog friendly.

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types are well catered to around here, with canoeing and paddleboarding at Symonds Yat Rock, archery and clay pigeon shooting in St Briavels, and pony trekking at Bream. If you're into golfing, then you're also in luck: Coleford has two courses, both less than 10 minutes' drive away. Follow the walking trail through the ancient 14-acre forest of Puzzlewood – the location for the filming of Dr Who, Star Wars, Merlin and Atlantis – to see rock formations and twisted trees, or visit Clearwell Caves to learn about the forest's 4,500-year ore and ochre mining heritage, both within a couple of easy miles of the site. Heaps of historic spots are within easy reach of Greenacres Campsite too, including Tintern Abbey's ruins and the castles of Raglan, Goodrich and Chepstow. The Dean Heritage Centre is a short drive away in the valley of Soudley, and comes highly recommended by Greenacres staff.
