  • Back to basics Peak District site with a view over Millers Dale
  • A mile to the Monsal Trail; 15 minutes' drive to Buxton and Bakewell
  • Farm shop and café on site; firepits available to hire
Bunk up in a barn at Beltonville Farm for a brill time in the White Peak part of the Peak District – this site’s just a mile from the Monsal Trail and therefore splendidly placed for a strolling, cycling or horse-riding holiday in Derbyshire. When you’re not tottering along this disused railway line transformed into a pretty path, soak up the views over Miller’s Dale; the park is in an elevated position looking out across this Site of Special Scientific Interest’s rock-studded landscape. Chillout sessions are of course boosted by having nosh to chomp on, so drop by the farm shop on site before dusk to pick up bits and bobs such as local veg. The site also has its own café, the Cow Shed Café, which is open every day from 9am. There are regular live music events at the on-site café, mostly on weekends, including live bands, tribute acts and karaoke; on these nights only, cask ales, wines, spirits and beer or cider are up for grabs. Rather a meander followed by a meal out? Map your way to one of several local pubs within a three-mile radius instead for supper. This is a back to basics site but it's well maintained and stretches to such luxuries as toilets and showers. There's also a washing-up area and facilities for people with disabilities. Wood can be purchased at the park for the firepit.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked: Informative and easy check in process. Site was well equipped with amenities (toilets, showers, cleaning station). Fantastic farm shop and a place to buy hot food if needed. Brilliant night time entertainment with a bar and fresh pizza.

Disliked: Only seemed to be one set of campsite toilets which were a slightly long walk depending on where you were on the site. They did get quite dirty but the weather overnight and into the next day didn’t help (very wet and muddy).

Liked: The laid back vibes, onsite farm shop, bar and cafe were all top notch and so convenient. Great idea to offer the loyalty cards too.

Special shout out to the biscoff rocky road that the boys especially liked. 10/10 would reccomend.

We camped up with our friends for 2 nights. Did a chippy tea from nearby Tideswell on night 1 and a BBQ onsite on night 2.

We kept nicknaming it Beltonview because of the beautiful surrounding views on sides of the campsite. And due to the time of year we were lucky enough to see some of the lambs being born on our way to and from the campsite to the rest of the facilities.

Good facilities and plenty of things to do and see nearby. We pitched next to our friends and had plenty of space to set up and spread out. The toilets never ran out of loo roll, and everything was generally tidy and well maintained.

Really well thought out and a fab location to have so close to home for those weekend adventures!

Disliked: Our only grouches, if we could call it that was it can be quite a trek to the loos depending on how far up the field you're pitched, so adding some additional facilities would just add to the comfort factor.

A couple of the locks on the doors broke whilst we were there (credit to the staff they were repaired during our stay).

And it would be good to see some proper sanitary bins as its not ideal having sanitary products just loose in a normal little bin.

But all in all no complaints.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked: The friendly, family atmosphere was lovely - felt very safe. The farmer was lambing and explaining to children and families from the campsite how and why certain things are done. Then the farmer was helping out in the venue at night. An All rounder! The shop and bar staff were extra helpful too. It is so easy to walk out from the campsite onto many different hikes - being close to the Monsal Trail and Angler’s Rest (pub) were extra bonuses. A very much enjoyable stay and I will be back soon.

Disliked: There were only 2 showers working and the campsite was fairly full.

Also the ladies toilets doors were tricky to shut and lock often left it unlocked and people walked in.

Liked: Great view, nice location. Good staff, shop on site for essentials, fire pit rental was cool. bar seemed nice but I didn't use it.

Disliked: Could have done with a bit of space to brush teeth in a sink. Toilets could have been cleaned over the weekend for the price of a pitches.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked: Very beautiful, peaceful location. Large field with space for the kids to run around and play. Toilets and showers in portercabin type buildings. Regularly cleaned. The staff were lovely and friendly. The ewes were lambing during our stay and the farmer had a lovely chat with us and let my son stroke one.

Disliked: Be aware the site runs music events so check their events page as I imagine it can sometime be busier/nosier.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked: Big pitches, great animals, not too noisy (although we went in April so not that busy!)

Disliked: Queues for showers so didn’t have one! The cubicles are a great idea for comfort but prolong the time in the unit even if the shower is limited to time.

Local attractions

Squidged between Bakewell and Buxton (15 minutes’ drive from either), Beltonville has a nifty location near two of Derbyshire’s most popular towns. Make a foray to the former for River Wye wanders, passing by the medieval arched stone bridge, and the latter to see around some stunning architecture. Highlights on the heritage trail around Buxton Spa include the Georgian-era crescent, the Roman baths and the cupola-topped Devonshire Dome; for older buildings, the village of Castleton (25 minutes), lying in the lee of Mam Tor, has the Norman ruins of Peveril Castle to peer at. This spot’s also the gateway to the Blue John caves, the only places on the planet where the semi-precious Blue John stone can be found. Cast your eye over the largest intact piece ever mined on display at Treak Cliff Cavern (25 minutes), which also has some rather sizable stalactites and stalagmites for geologist types to gaze lovingly upon. Those aiming to give their walking boots a good workout here have plenty of choice: it's well located not just for the Monsal Trail and Millers Dale but also Chee Dale, Tideswell Dale and Winnets Pass.
