You may well spot a few Highland cows by the side of the road as you roam through the Highlands and Islands – but how about a stay where you can get so close you can actually brush that gorgeous ginger hair? Indeed that’s one of the options on offer at Kirkton Holidays, a family-run working farm five minutes’ drive from the north coast at Melvich. This is a place where there’s always something going on, and the folk on site are eager to welcome guests in for a true taste of farming life. Come along in April and May to poke your nose into the lambing shed, or schedule a trip between March and June to catch the calving season in action. Even outside of those busiest seasons, there’s plenty to see and do here: settle in for trout fishing (in season), take mountain bikes out onto the tracks or wander along the farm’s pathways to spy wildlife, meet pygmy goats Harris and Tweed, feed the sheep and play with the dogs (as long as they’re not on duty at the time). For even more insight, sign up for a farm buggy tour where you’ll get taken around the farm, learn a bit about the farming calendar and take in the stunning views from the highest hill around. And yes – have a little stroke of those hairy Highland cows… At the end of the day, pick up some home-bred beef or lamb (in season) to grill on your barbecue; serve up on outdoor tables or in a cosy wooden cabin. Electric hookups are provided, but please note there are no waste disposal facilities, so you'll need to deal with your rubbish elsewhere. It's also worth noting there are no toilets on site.

喜欢: Everything about the facilitiy. The hosts were welcoming and the site we were allocated was spacious and clean. The site is on a working farm so lots of lovely animals to see, particularly at this time of year. We intend to return with our grandson precisely because of this. We were only a few minutes inland from the North Coast 500 route but was very quiet and peaceful. Easy access to the NC500, cycle routes and sea swimming. Also several good feeding stations nearby in Melvich and Bettyhill.

喜欢: Everything. People were lovely and the site was incredibly peaceful. Lots of animals to see and interact with. The highlight of our NC500 trip. Thanks to the owners for a pleasant stay.

喜欢: Great place to stay! Hosts were very welcoming even supplied us with Morning pancakes. Definitely recommend for a nights stay very quiet even though it was a working farm. Saw lambs being born. No showers or CWP or Wi-Fi but that was fine for us we knew before hand.

喜欢: A very different place to stay. Only 2 pitches, but both with electricity. On a working farm with unlimited access to anywhere on the farm. Lots of different animals (we saw sheep, pigs, highland cows, goats, chickens) and owners happy to take time to chat and answer any questions.

喜欢: What a wonderful spot! So quiet and beautiful but also an actual proper working farm. The owners were really friendly despite being VERY busy lambing. We were invited to wonder around the barns and saw a lamb born. We stroked the Highland coos and petted the goats too. We cheekily asked to borrow a screwdriver to repair a connection in the van before we left and were quickly accommodated. It's almost off grid with EHU only. (We got O2 4g) But that's not a problem for us, it's part of the charm. There's a great pub and the most stunning beach in Melvich too. Would definitely return!

喜欢: I would just like to thank you all for making us feel so welcome last night on your farm. I loved meeting all the animals, playing with the dogs and holding a newborn lamb. It was a lovely treat for me as I love all animals. Hopefully we will get back up sometime to spend more time on your farm.

In among all the antics on site, it’s worth finding time to explore the local area – as so often with the Highlands, it’s rather gorgeous. For starters, there’s a splendid sandy beach a mile and a half away at Melvich, and you can take a walk out to the cliffs at Puffin Cove to see the birds from may to early August. For a tipple or two to go with your evening meal, swing by the Wolfburn Distillery (25 minutes’ drive) for your whisky or Rock Rose (40 minutes) for a bottle of local gin. The seafood’s pretty good around here too – stop by at Scrabster or Thurso (both 25 minutes) to see boats coming in and see what you can find to eat. Alternatively, grab your golf clubs for a day on the course at Reay (10 minutes), stroll around 16th-century Castle of Mey (45 minutes) or take a day tour to Orkney from Thurso. If you’ve not yet snapped a pic of yourself by the John o’Groats sign, that’s slightly less than an hour away.
