Have a hol with your head in the clouds – quite literally – at Camping El Carajo, a park high up in the mist-shrouded, forest-filled Andean mountains of Santander. Surrounded by ecological trails for wandering along, this is a serene spot for settling down in the middle of Colombia’s nature. Stunning views over tree-covered valleys and hills from the site’s setting way up high mean there’s no need to set foot away from the grounds to experience the countryside – just park yourself down and soak up the vibes away from noise and traffic. The park’s friendly and peaceful atmosphere is partly down to its clever setup: it’s split into three zones that are reserved for three types of travellers. There’s a family area with no music allowed, a couples’ area permitting music and campfires through to 1am, and a group area with minimal rules. If you're planning on offsetting snoozy times in this hidden spot with buzzy city trips, Bucaramanga’s around a 50-minute drive away down the winding mountain roads. It’s likely you’ll pass through the city on your way up to the park – so it's best to stock up on your essentials here as it's where the area's bigger supermarkets are located. Once you have the provisions you need, it might be tricky to leave the peace and quiet of this pretty place that hovers at a pleasant temperature of around 18 degrees Celsius most of the year…

The beauty of this site is its tucked-away location, so the main things to do here revolve around hiking in the forest and through the hills, or curling up with a book. But if you’re up for adventuring while in Santander? The area around Bucaramanga has more than enough to keep you entertained. Learn about Colombia’s Catholic culture close to the city at Ecoparque El Santisimo (40 minutes' drive), which houses a huge monument of Jesus accessible by either cable car or a hike up the 2.8-kilometre Helechales path. Locals sell fruits, veg and crafts at spots along the way – pick up something to snack on while gazing at the vistas from the viewpoint on top of the statue’s head. Other landmarks with a religious theme are in Bucaramanga (50 minutes), like the bright-white Sagrada Familia Cathedral, which is worth visiting before sipping on a cocktail and attempting to seek out the holy building's spires from the city's rooftop Skybar with its 360-degree downtown views. Another scenic spot in this place of parks includes the vast Eloy Valenzuela Botanical Gardens with its lake, woodland trails and iguana-filled gardens dotted with 3,500 species of plants, from palms to orchids.
