Pitch with compost loo and hot shower

  • Eco-camping on a nature reserve in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
  • Newgale Beach five minutes’ drive; Oakwood Theme Park 25 minutes
  • Private hot showers and washing-up sinks; communal campers’ kitchen
With woodland and meadow pitches on 29 acres of rewilding nature reserve in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Bôn Camping is all about wild camping adventures in the thick of nature 15 minutes’ drive from Haverfordwest. Not completely ‘wild’, however, as each pitch comes with a hut kitted out with a loo, hot shower, drinking water, covered washing-up sink and food-prep area. Every pitch has a picnic table and firepit too; campfires are actively encouraged, and tubs of firewood available at an additional cost. There’s also a campers’ shed (handy for inclement days) where you can store food in communal fridges and freezers. All with valley views, the pitches sit amid long grass and wild flowers, encouraging local wildlife (no, not you). And while wandering the network of footpaths across the campsite – you might spot Kunekune pigs, ponies and longhorn cows on your expeditions – there’s little to hear except for birdsong, breezes ruffling the grass and the sound of waves breaking on the shoreline (yes, Newgale Beach is five minutes’ drive away). The ethos of Bôn Camping is to provide an eco-conscious and safe place for kids to roam freely, so cars are not allowed on pitches and wheelbarrows are on hand to move your gear around the place. And finally, as only eco-products are allowed on site, green shampoos, conditioner, soaps and washing-up liquid are provided for no extra cost.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: We’ve just returned from a wonderful week at Bon Camping and would highly recommend it. We opted for a woodland pitch and although the walk to the pitch and back isn’t for the faint hearted when you’re lugging a load of camping equipment, once you’re there it’s more than worth the effort. The pitch and facilities were brilliant - we loved the compost toilet and hot shower, and the sink with running hot water was much appreciated. The site is so beautiful and peaceful - our children loved exploring and were perfectly safe to do so. The owners and their children were so welcoming, friendly and helpful - we really couldn’t have asked for more. There’s loads to see and do in the area and we will be back next year. Thank you so much for having us!

Bell tent (woodland)

Liked: Location - idyllic peaceful unspoilt land and its proximity to the sea - 11 minutes to drive to Newgale Surf Club Hosts warm friendly chilled and eager to help with anything Their children very welcoming Other campers - nice energy Recycling Facilities The Bell Tent and private kitchen / bathroom cabin The birds Shower was amazing nice and hot Views were lovely over the fields Fresh clean air The Stars at night It felt very private once we unpacked and had made it our temporary home - could hear others a little but not see anyone. Just what we all needed.

Disliked: Rogue night time squirrels ( beware - lock all food and fun items in black crate provided) ! Local food in pubs and restaurants not for us. Next time we would buy lovely quality fresh food locally - Fran and Gordon can direct you - and cook ourselves then head out for a sundown pint. Decent coffee shops not in abundance - bring your own to brew and a Thermos. We had a technical problem at start of stay but it was sorted quickly once the issue was raised

Non-electric grass tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: The best camp site you will ever stay on!! We loved our stay, it was the perfect balance of ‘wild’ yet had all the conveniences you need for a comfortable stay. We stayed on one of the woodland pitches which was very secluded and you really felt amongst nature. We had around a 5 minute walk to our pitch from the car and very large wheelbarrows were helpfully provided for us to transport our luggage. On going again however, I would definitely pack light as the walk back to the car is uphill over uneven woodland. The private toilet and shower on our pitch were very well maintained and clean. We will definitely be booking again!

Local attractions

Surfing anybody? Sunbathing, picnicking or rock pooling? Whatever seaside vibe you prefer, you’ll find it at beaches nearby. Sandy Newgale (five minutes’ drive) is a hub for surfing, sea kayaking and other watersports. Head for Nolton Haven for safe family swimming and lifeguards in summer, while there are natural arches and caves to explore at Druidston Haven (both 10 minutes). For a chance to spot seals basking on rocks, choose the shingle at Abermawr Beach (25 minutes). Turning inland for more days out with family, younger kids can meet farm animals and try gentle fairground rides at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (half an hour), while the mega-coasters of Oakwood Theme Park (25 minutes) will keep the bravest of teens happy. For some adult downtime, taste artisan beers at the local microbrewery, which doubles neatly as the village pub in Roch (10 minutes’ walk), and work off the calories at the public tennis court. For longer strolls, follow the Brandy Brook Trail (five minutes’ drive) through woodland and past castles, or yomp sections of the clifftop Pembrokeshire Coast Path (40 minutes’ walk) for spectacular sea and shoreline views.
