  • Replica pioneer settlement in Florida Panhandle, 10 minutes from town
  • Half an hour from State Park hikes and 40 minutes from Lake Talquin
  • Gulf Coast beaches and Tallahassee just over an hour's drive away
You've heard of living history. This is holiday history, staying next to a log cabin village replicating Florida's pioneer communities of the 19th century... right down to the finest detail. Panhandle Pioneer Camp is a 10-minute drive from Blountstown, in Florida's north-western panhandle. It's a part of the state more like the Deep South than humid southern Florida, a landscape of natural springs and pinewoods: you'll soon come to understand how those early settlers made a living here. For example, you can wander the 18 restored buildings learning what kids learned in the schoolhouse, see how the blacksmith's role made him so vital to these tiny communities, or discover why a trip to the doctor's surgery was such a big deal. But you'll be relieved to hear that not every detail of your stay will be from the 19th century: unlike the pioneers, you'll benefit from baths and hot showers, a laundry and free wifi. There's a playground for the kids as well, but they might just ask you if they can stay back in olden times, as the forge runs classes for would-be blacksmiths and those with an extra sweet tooth can cut their own canes and turn them into syrup.

Local attractions

However buried in the past you get, you'll be glad to know that it's a 10-minute drive to the modern amenities of Blountstown, with shops, supermarkets, bars and eateries of all sorts. If you fancy a change from the slow pace of pioneer life, race over to the Tri-State Off-Road Park (20 minutes' drive) to watch and experience for yourself the joys of driving vehicles of various sizes through mud holes and round dirt tracks at speed; maybe bring a change of clothes for when you've finished the messy mayhem. More tranquil pursuits can be found among the forested bluffs of Torreya State Park (half an hour), hiking the trails, visiting the old plantation house and looking out for salamanders and black bears. For a more watery wilderness, Lake Talquin and its surrounding park is a 40-minute drive away, full of bass, perch and catfish, canoes and kayaks to traverse the quiet waters and walking paths through the ravines. Both reachable within an hour and 10 minutes, Crooked Island and Shell Island State Park offer clear waters where you can swim and snorkel spotting sea turtles and dolphin pods and white sand beaches studded with pretty shells. Make time for Tallahassee, too, a similar distance away, for museums, galleries, tip-top Southern food and a sizzling live music scene.
