  • Peaceful Pumalín Park site with stunning views of the Chilean Andes
  • On the spectacularly scenic Carretera Austral long-distance route
  • South Pacific beaches within a 15-minute drive
Settle in for a few nights of lush vistas at Camping Reldehue, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the small hamlet of Chaitén in the Palena Province of Chile’s Los Lagos region. On the edge of Pumalín Park, the site is within easy reach of rainforest and fjords, worthy hikes, organic farms and local craft workshops. There are trails for all difficulty levels, with some of the easier options starting about 15 minutes from base and more challenging routes requiring a trek further into the wilderness. To see more of the spectacular scenery than manageable on two feet, trade in hiking boots for driving gloves (people still wear those, right?) and clamber into the four-wheel drive for jaunts along the Carretera Austral, Chile’s answer to Route 66 – it’s more than 1,000 kilometres of pretty landscapes and exceptional views, and well worth some off-roading to experience it. Wash off the dust of the day in the hot showers on site before grilling up eats over the barbecue or firepit (there’s a dishwasher, so no pesky washing up afterwards), or have a night on the town. There’s wifi on site too so you can upload those stunning shots from heady hikes and bouncy 4x4 tours – how else will everyone at home be jealous of those fab jungle days...?

Local attractions

The jungle of Pumalín Park might be the big draw round here, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing else worthy of attention in this spectacular part of Chile, starting with seaside days 15 minutes’ drive away at the prettily scenic Playa Santa Barbara for sandy strolls, Pacific swims and lazy, hazy, sunbathy days. More active days by the water are within easy reach at Yelcho Lake, half an hour from base, where fishers can cast a line, boat fans can do some rowing, ramblers can opt for a trek or horse riding excursion, and twitchers can keep eyes peeled for rare specimens. Prefer a more soothing experience? Peaceful (and history-filled) strolls are 20 minutes away among the cave paintings and petroglyphs of Morro Vilcún caves, and the Amarillo Hot Springs are just over half an hour from the site if lengthy basks and bubbles sound like perfection. Hiking fans not satisfied with the offerings in Pumalín Park may like to make tracks for the Yelcho Glacier trail (40 minutes away), a three-hour round trip that takes in the phenomenal hanging glacier (Ventisquero Cavi).
