  • Spacious, tidy park with pools and tennis courts by the Collie River
  • 15 mins to buzzing Bunbury, Ferguson Valley's hills and vineyards
  • Swim with wild dolphins at Koombana beach, 10 minutes away
Australia's landscape might be ancient, but it's ever changing. Bunbury, Western Australia's City of Three Waters, is one of the best examples. The former industrial port has reinvented itself as a happening hub where street art and vibrant venues line the waterways crisscrossing the town. You can see the best of it, and the surrounding region of lush valleys and peaceful forests from a berth at Riverside Park, eight kilometres from the city centre on the banks of the Collie River in the suburb of Eaton. Well-tended grassy lawns and wide drives give the park a neat and calm atmosphere, and facilities like the laundry and the family bathrooms are conveniently together in one block. Camp kitchens and barbecues around the park mean you don't miss the great Australian outdoors for a minute and when you need supplies, there's a 24 hour store across the road. You can play tennis at pretty much any hour too on the floodlit courts, then finish with a dip in the pool. Practise swimming like a dolphin, then do it for real. Koombana Beach (ten minutes drive) is a popular and safe spot for families but the real draw are the hundred-odd bottlenose dolphins in the Discovery Centre. Like much of Western Australia, they're wild but friendly.

Local attractions

The 'three waters' surrounding this small, vibrant city (Indian Ocean, Leschenault Estuary and Collie River) keep the vibe relaxed; you're never far from a riverside path or cycle trail and a quiet spot to fish. Hiring bikes is a tiptop way to take in this city of eye catching wall art, street cafés and chic boutiques, but if you want to take it easier, hop on the restored tram. You can cruise the bay and estuary by boat or get closer to the water, body boarding at Back Beach. Local firms take divers out to explore the wrecks off the coast while a heritage walk with a guide from the local Noongar tribe will take you further back in time. Tradition has it that the rural town of Dardanup (15 minutes) is the start of the Ferguson Valley, and it's a good place to start. This region of green hills, lush pastures and laidback little towns is easy on the eye but less so on the waistline. Wineries and dairies, growers of produce and makers of delicious things are dotted throughout the valley. Worry not though, work it off in Wellington National Park (40 minutes) walking the trails and swimming the reservoir.
