Peak District hike followed by a well-earned pint? Splendid. All of this followed by a short toddle of a couple of minutes to your bed? Even more splendid. Such is the situation at The Devonshire Arms, where pitches have been set up just behind the 16th-century village inn in Peak Forest. Footpaths lead directly from this site to the Pennine Bridleway for walks and bike rides, with the likes of Mam Tor, Speedwell Cavern and Blue John Cavern all within striking distance. There’s bike hire nearby too if you’re not able to bring your own wheels along. This is a handy spot from which to explore Derbyshire by car too – it’s just off the A623 so there’s speedy enough access to places like Buxton (15 minutes’ drive) and Bakewell (20 minutes), to places like Chatsworth House or to the more remote corners of the Peak District National Park. And at the end of the day? It’s back to the pub, where freshly cooked meals can be washed down with well-kept real ales in the cosy bar or out in the beer garden before you stroll back to your pitch. The pub’s dog friendly and open from Thursday to Sunday; on other days, maybe journey into Chapel-en-le-Frith (10 minutes’ drive) for supermarket supplies or takeaways. This is a small site with simple facilities, but guests can use the wifi, and the toilets and wash basins in the pub are accessible 24 hours a day.

Positiv: Really lovely helpful staff, delicious food and local ales. Great area with so much to see. Loved the honesty shop. Would definately come again.

Positiv: Friendly service, small site

Negativ: No hot water in shower but may have been due to amount of use. I didn’t ask but sure it would have been resolved if I had.

Positiv: Easy to park up behind the pub.There is basic facilities including water, toilet facilities and a shower and also an area to wash up. We ate in the pub once and enjoyed the food. It is a good location to plan walks from

Positiv: Friendly staff and nice pub. Lovely drive to get there. The site was small but there was a toilet and shower available. Small shop on site.

Negativ: Noisy road, overlooked by housing. Food was okay.

Positiv: Very friendly staff, availability of clean toilet and shower 24hrs, food in the pub was home cooked and plentiful. It was in a good location for exploring the dales

Negativ: Not a criticism of the pub but the weather! The grass was quite soggy still and not wanting to get stuck we parked in the carpark which was still fine.

Positiv: Convenient (it was raining heavily at the time and it was just off the Pennine Bridleway). By a pub (which served food until 9pm). The staff let me leave my bike under cover.

Negativ: The faff of booking and paying via pitchup (having not used it before). The cost at £20 was expensive - more than I have ever paid for a simple pitch. (When I left, I got back onto the Pennine Bridleway by turning right off the A623. There was a large sign for a campsite about 50m up the road, though I did not investigate further.) The proximity to the fairly busy A623, which made it quite noisy at times.

Vom Platzbetreiber: This review is disappointing and amazing in equal measures . The gentleman turned up cold and wet we welcomed him into the pub ( no food or drink ) and rang round for a bed and breakfast for him . Most places were full but we eventually found somewhere in Chapel but he wasn't prepared to spend the £60 B & B charge. He then unfortunately decided to camp with us . It was booked through PU as this is correct and proper from a paper trail , morality , insurance and tax/vat perspective - little did we realise this would become a focus of criticism. Im at a loss at what is expected these days for so little when commission, card chgs, staff costs, cleaning costs , gas , electric, maintenance and tax/vat all come into play. its clear from this that outlook and not outcome feature heavily in any review . Desperate and noisy is camping in Gaza not in rural Peak Forest

Positiv: Lovely well positioned pub stop over very close to all the favourite spots in the High Peaks. Great hosts so very helpful and friendly. Nice pub and food. Little on-site shop for basic essentials Good small level site with facilities and available after pub hours. Road was a little busy but site far enough away.

Keen to give your boots or bike a workout? You’ve come to the right spot – from the pub it’s an easy jaunt to Mam Tor (10 minutes’ drive), the Monsal Trail (15 minutes) or Stanage Edge (25 minutes). You might like to stop in for a dip at the open-air pool in Hathersage (20 minutes) at the end too. There are many fine views to see around here – and some equally great sights to be seen below ground if you head to Poole’s Cavern & Buxton Country Park (15 minutes) or up to Castleton (10 minutes) to visit Speedwell Cavern and Blue John Cavern. Back up on the surface, get a hit of history at Eyam (10 minutes), the village that sealed itself off from the world during the Bubonic Plague of 1665. Away from all the rural attractions, take some town time at the opera house, gallery and museum in Buxton (15 minutes) or fuelling up at the pudding shops of Bakewell (20 minutes). The excellent Chatsworth House (25 minutes) should be on the schedule too, for the farm shop and playground as well as the house and gardens.
