  • Well-maintained family site just over a mile from Tywyn
  • In the Snowdonia National Park half an hour's drive from Dolgellau
  • Access to woodland walks and fishing on the Dysynni river
Calling all walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers, beachgoers… there's a lovely base for all of you at Ynysymaengwyn Caravan and Camping Park, in the grounds of a ruined old manor house in rural Gwynedd, just over a mile from Tywyn and its beach. This is a peaceful spot indeed for a break, as the pitches are surrounded by woodland where you can head out for walks (with your dog by your side if you’ve brought them along for the ride) or follow the orienteering course for a bit more of a challenge. There's also an adventure playground to keep the kids busy, plus access to the Dysynni river at the bottom of the site for anglers to fish for salmon and trout. This is a park that likes to keep things simple and relaxed rather than providing lots of entertainment, but it’s got all the essential facilities sorted including a launderette, an Elsan point and toilets and showers with accessible facilities. The location of the park is at the southern tip of the Snowdonia National Park and very close to the coast, so there’s no shortage of things to do – whether you’d like hardcore hiking or something rather more gentle. And you shouldn’t go hungry either, as Tywyn has a good collection of places to eat including cafés, chip shops, takeaways and restaurants. The town also has a supermarket and bakery if you’d rather sort your own meals back at base or pick up picnic bits.

Liked: Everything. The staff were welcoming, friendly and gave the impression that they would try and help wherever they could. The site has loads to do if you have young kids, the brand new play area was a hit with both of mine! The mapped out walks were also a lovely touch with lots of things to explore along the way. The toilets and showers were clean and well maintained. The camping area was well laid out and well kept with plenty of shaded spots if you don’t want to be in the sun. We will be booking again for a longer stay so we can explore more of the spectacular looking surrounding area. Free WiFi!

Disliked: Not got any dislikes just a couple of suggestions to make it even better. A small on site shop with the basics would be great, especially when someone forgets to pack the washing up liquid😳! And a communal freezer so ice packs can be refrozen for picnic bags on days out off site.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (six person)

Liked: The shower/toilet block was great, very clean, powerful showers with no shortage of hot water, and plenty of toilets/showers so there was no queueing for facilities Lovely open space with a gorgeous tree in the centre of the camping field with rope swings for the kids, plus some woods behind the pitches with a little den built in there Great park with up to date equipment, and also location wise only 5 minutes from the beach! There was a pizza van and a ice cream van on our first nights stay as well, we didn't take advantage of this as we got a chippy from the (excellent) local chippy but certainly looked and smelled good Would certainly stay here again, also the owner was absolutely lovely! Can't comment on WiFi as I didn't even check if it was an option, but no problem as I had phone signal anyway

Electric optional grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked: How friendly the site owners are, the site is very clean and tidy, the toilet and shower blocks are cleaned at least 3 times a day. The site has a lovely park, woodland walks and is really accessible to the local town and a railway for days out. The field is kept today and well kept, very friendly site, not loud after 10.

Disliked: No shop on site or camping shops near by for supplies if you run out.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (six person)

Liked: *Toilets were cleaned continuously *Nice flat ground for camping *Lots of open space and walks to do *The staff were friendly and helped when there were issues *Cheap electric vehicle charging on site

Disliked: *The camp site was not allocated, more of a 'find a space' which only just worked out. *The playground was away from the campsite, maybe if there was a playground on the camping field would have been a bonus *no shop on site - just a few essentials which could help the camper, and the owner to make a fortune!

Local attractions

As well as being your nearest source of food, Tywyn’s a great little seaside town with a sandy beach, miniature golf, pitch and putt and tennis courts. It’s also the starting point for the Talyllyn Railway, which runs into the countryside for a scenic ride – a particularly nice way to do it is to ride to Dolgoch and walk to its waterfall before a cuppa in the tea rooms. Walkers may like to set out on the Wales Coast Path or head inland for a wander along the shores of Tal-y-llyn lake (15 minutes’ drive), scramble up the slopes of Penygader (20 minutes) or head to the walking hub of Dolgellau (half an hour) to explore the trails around there. Mountain bikers, meanwhile, will no doubt want to tackle the trails of Coed-y-Brenin (45 minutes) while birdwatchers learn about the residents of Dyfi Osprey Project (half an hour). Once you’ve spent some time on the sands of Tywyn, head a little further along the coast to explore the dunes of Ynyslas Nature Reserve and see the petrified forest at Borth (both 45 minutes).
