Liked: Really loved the stay, hosts friendly and thoughtful, there was even milk in the fridge. Loved seeing the animals, especially Bonnie the Highland Cow.

Local attractions

Once you’ve meandered along the Mawddach Trail, you might like to set your sights on a bigger challenge by climbing Cadair Idris – Wales’ second-highest mountain is within walking distance of the farm. If mountain bikes are more your style, you’ll want to head for Coed y Brenin Forest Park (15 minutes’ drive), known as one of the country’s top mountain bike sites. Of course, you might just want to take it easy instead – in which case you can follow walking trails from Dolgellau (10 minutes) or ride the Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog (40 minutes) up to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Alternatively, stick around at the coast for the lovely sandy beaches of Fairbourne (10 minutes) and Barmouth (20 minutes, linked by a short ferry across the estuary or head up to Harlech Castle (40 minutes), in a spectacular clifftop spot high above the dunes below. A little further north is Portmeirion (40 minutes), an Italian-style village with colourful houses and acres of subtropical garden to explore.
