Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely open space, dogs allowed to run off lead which was amazing for them. Mark really helpful with local information and able to walk straight onto dartmoor so no need to move the van. Toliet kept clean and shower even though only one there worked perfectly. Marks wife lit a amazing campfire each night and was lovely to go sit round and chat to others. Could have stayed last longer! Thankyou Mark for such a relaxed campsite

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The facilities and welcome at this campsite were great. Composting toilets were clean and well put together as was the shower and there was a large shared forepit lit for the whole campground by the hosts. The hosts were welcoming and knowledgeable and the site is dog friendly. Nearby woods are a stones throw away and make for very good walking. Thank you for a great stay!

Disliked: The site is on a bit of a slope which can be annoying and you have to remember to bring your own drinking water - as stated in the site info.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: A beautifully simple and uncomplicated campsite set in the woods. There is everything you need and nothing you don’t. The Geography locally will mean that bringing a large motorhome or caravan on site will present challenges but for a campsite that offers a real sense of remoteness and peace while not being utterly distant, this cannot be beaten. No wifi (perfect); no amenities (because you have Dartmoor); no baby change facilities (not the point of the campsite).

From the manager: Many thanks Alistair for the 10/10! So glad you enjoyed your stay at Gidleigh wood camping. Cheers Mark

Liked: The location was great! Was a bit hard to find and not well signed posted but we found it and had a great stay and was nice to just go for a beautiful walk straight from the campsite instead of driving somewhere!

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Beautiful location up on Dartmoor. Lovely walks straight from the campsite. Chilled atmosphere. Friendly owner. Very dog-friendly. Great communal fire pit.

Disliked: For me, I was a little anxious as dogs are allowed to run free and my dog can be reactive when approached. But that's just my situation and, as it was, there were no issues. Quite hard to find but well worth it when I did!

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Friendly owner

Disliked: Very small roads to access the site and after a lot of rain recently the main entrance was unusable and the “backup” entrance is most likely to cause you to drag the tail of your camper/motorhome. The site has very few level areas

Local attractions

Fancy a challenge once you’ve warmed up on the trails nearby? How about a hike up High Willhays, the highest point in southern England at 621 metres. Meldon Hill, just outside Chagford, is another that’s worth a climb for some excellent moorland views. Shilley Pool, a few miles north of the site, is a lovely spot to cool off with some wild swimming in the river. For a glimpse into times gone by, stop by at the National Trust’s Finch Foundry (15 minutes’ drive) to see an old water-powered forge, or head to the Museum of Dartmoor Life (20 minutes) to explore the themed exhibits. Castle Drogo (20 minutes) may look like a historic building thanks to its medieval styling but it was actually constructed in the 20th century by renowned architect Edwin Lutyens – that modern take on a traditional style makes it a fascinating place to visit. Other days out nearby might take you over to Exeter (40 minutes) to visit the cathedral and museums and delve into the underground passages, or down to the coast for a day on the beach in Dawlish (45 minutes).
