  • Shepherd’s hut on a family-run farm 10 minutes’ drive from Romsey
  • New Forest National Park 15 minutes’ drive; Winchester half an hour
  • Lambing and calf feeding; woodland walks; fishing in the River Test
Fancy the idea of glamping in a shepherd’s hut – maybe with an optional twist of farm-life experience? At Michelmersh Manor Farm, a family-run working farm a 10-minute drive from the Hampshire market town of Romsey, you can get involved (or not) with such tasks as lambing (in April) and calf feeding; alternatively, you can choose to be a spectator and simply watch the cows being milked by state-of-the-art machines. Surrounded by fields, the farm sits at the end of a no-through road, which pretty much guarantees peaceful nights; after a restorative sleep, you’ll be raring to go and explore the local area. Paths starting from the site lead through ancient woodland carpeted with bluebells and seasonal flowers. Other local walks include the Monarch Way, a long-distance path that links Worcester to Shoreham-on-Sea, and the Test Way, which follows the river of the same name – if you’re holidaying with a keen angler, they might insist on stopping for a spot of trout fishing on its banks. If you like a pub at the end of your walk, head into the village of Timbsbury (half an hour on foot) for a pint of a real ale and a traditional meal. There are heaps of walking (and cycling) routes through New Forest National Park (15 minutes’ drive), which also has several wildlife centres, including Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary and the New Forest Reptile Centre (both half an hour). Birdwatchers, meanwhile, head to Keyhaven Marshes (one hour), on the Solent, where mudflats and saline lagoons shelter curlews, dunlins and other migratory birds.

Local attractions

There are gentle rides for young children at Paultons Park Home of Peppa Pig World (20 minutes’ drive), where your offspring can meet their favourite characters from the popular TV series. If the kids are a little older, Paultons Park also has thrill rides like roller coasters and drop towers. Winchester (half an hour) is famed for its spectacular Gothic cathedral, which is the longest medieval church in the world. Gaze up at the remarkable vault and explore the seven chantry chapels, then check out the ruins of Wolvesey Castle (Old Bishop’s Palace) or head to one of the city’s museums, such as the Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum. If you’re into maritime history, you will not want to miss a visit to Southampton (half an hour), departure point of the ill-fated Titanic. Check out the Titanic Memorial Stone and the Titanic Story exhibition at the SeaCity Museum. The Solent Sky Museum is for anyone who favours vintage planes over ships.
