Setting forth for the Lake District to seek out some scenic views? Settle in to Seatoller Farm and you can start on the scenery-seeing without so much as moving from the site. At this family-run working hill farm in Cumbria, the views are stunning whichever way you turn, taking in vistas of the Borrowdale valley and the River Derwent. At this back to basics site, there’s no wifi or phone signal (except Vodafone in Seatoller itself), so switch off and embrace the wild feel. When you roll up, there’s no reception, so pick out a pitch. Owner Daniel comes around in the morning and evening to check on guests, but they’re not always in the house. Every Saturday night (between 6pm and 8pm), stone-baked pizzas are sold on the farm. Take it back to your tent or tuck in inside the seating barn. Tasty toppings include the site’s own pork and Herdwick lamb. Also up for grabs at the farm (or from Dan on his rounds) are rare breed pork sausages, Herdwick lamb and mint burgers or logs and kindling. A nifty central location in the Lake District National Park means this site is well placed for lots of walks, including scrambling up Scafell, ticking off the Wainwright fells or a leisurely riverside ramble. Protected woodland runs along one side of the farm, with wildlife like bats, buzzards, woodpeckers and owls among the site’s frequent visitors. The low-key facilities preserve the relaxed rural vibe – separate gents’ and ladies toilets are close to the pitches, as are washing-up facilities and drinking water taps; showers are a short walk away at the main farm building. Campfires and barbecues are allowed here, but only if they're kept off the grass (you'll immediately be asked to put out any fires that burn the grass). There are a couple of pubs about a mile away for food and drinks, and a hotel five minutes' walk away for drinks on the terrace. The campsite has excellent access to the local bus service that runs regularly from the farm during the season.

  • Recomenda-se que os hóspedes tragam consigo uma lanterna de boa qualidade, uma vez que algumas áreas do local não têm boa iluminação.
  • Tenha em atenção que os chuveiros são unissexo.
  • The shower block is located at the farm, which is a short 6-minute walk from the campsite; the toilets and washing up facilities are located in the middle of the campsite.

Gostou: We arrived late due to airport delays on the way, and were worried we wouldn’t be able to pitch up if it was shut before dark but got there and found the pitch and got the tent box up no dramas, there’s nice toilets as you arrive and inside all the information you need on clear signs for where to find things, camp rules, local amenities. It’s right down the road from the honister pass which was why we chose it, it made getting to our activities on time a breeze! We stayed the one night and it was easy peasy and a lovely stay for us and the dog!

Gostou: The facilities around were regularly cleaned and the staff were friendly. It was a good spot to do hikes and had no service so we could switch off from everyday life.

Não gostou: There wasn’t really anything we disliked other than other site users let their dogs run around when speaking to the owner they did ask them not to.

Gostou: Showers and toilets were clean. Pizza on Saturday night was lovely! No signal available and had to go closer to Keswick for this, but not a bad thing for a few days.

Não gostou: Lack of flat pitches available, wasn’t that much to choose from.

Gostou: A small campsite with clean toilets and washing area a few feet away. A stream runs through the site which is very picturesque. We were visited on the site about 9pm to check our booking and to ask any questions. The site is in a lovely spot with areas of interest close by. The Seatoller Farm is a short walk from the site and has a cafe, pub and barn eating area.

Não gostou: I don't think the site was monitored very much so pitching up was a bit of a free for all in terms of finding a spot. I'd advise getting there close to check in time. Unfortunately no electric pitches or signal (which is mentioned in the booking - would just be nice).

Gostou: We loved the peace and quiet of this idyllic site tucked away in Borrowdale. Dan and Ruby were so friendly and couldn't do enough to help. We walked along the lake to Keswick and returned by bus to fantastic homemade pizzas at the farm. We loved our stay here and will definitely return.

Gostou: Very rural and rustic campsite, it was lovely to be by the river and to be able to do various big circular day hikes straight from the site without driving. Daniel and his family that ran the site and farm were all absolutely lovely and couldn't be more friendly and helpful. The pizzas made at the farm were absolutely delicious also! Facilities really clean and looked after. Zero phone signal or wifi which was a lovely to fully switch off. Will stay again thanks :)

Não gostou: -The midges were very bad and got a lot of bites despite bug spray! -Cold water for washing up

Gostou: Site is peaceful, nice to pitch by the river.

Não gostou: Not impressed with washing up facilities, No hot water. Not great having to walk to the Farmhouse area for showers. They are good but if you have young family it's not great.

Gostou: Fantastic location for walking straight out onto the hills including scarfell. Short drive to Keswick (20 mins along beautiful winding road) local shop and pub an easy walking distance. Showers lovely and warm, toilet block kept clean. Great friendly and helpful owner Daniel.

Gostou: Close to a river/stream. Location. Close to tea room/shop etc. Quiet.

Não gostou: No hot water at site but because of location it's probably not possible. It didn't put me off.

Dust off those hiking boots, for Seatoller’s surrounds are stacked with walking trails to suit all comers, from those seeking a gentle stroll through woodland and across heather-strewn fells to those in search of more vertical challenges. The beginning of a couple of the national park’s top climbs are easy to get to too – Great Gable (an hour and a half) and mighty Scafell (a couple of hours). Roam a little further afield for hikes on Catbells (15 minutes’ drive), around the Castlerigg stone circle (25 minutes) or on the slopes of Helvellyn (half an hour away, and a fine choice for mountain bikers too). If you’d like to have a crack at climbing in a controlled environment, try the via ferrata route at Honister Slate Mine, five minutes away, and worth a stop for an underground mine tour even if you’re not up to clinging on to crags. All sound a little tiring? Less demanding days out include the Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour) and the sculpture trail at Rydal Hall Gardens (40 minutes). It’s worth knocking around Keswick for a bit too, visiting the eccentric Puzzling Place exhibition and Derwent Pencil Museum or taking tipples at the town’s brewery. Alpaca trekking at Lingholm Estate and Whinlatter Forest are some other splendid days out.
