The owners of Low Hollows reckon they’ve got one of the most stunning locations in the Lake District… and it’s easy to see why they love it. This Cumbria pop-up site is in the foothills of Blencathra, so it’s a scenic place, and it’s easy to get to as well – it's just a little way off the A66. That handy position means that it’s easy to get to the village of Threlkeld, a mile away, for two excellent pubs and a coffee shop – or continue on to the bigger market town of Keswick, less than 10 minutes’ drive away. The Keswick to Penrith bus route stops in the village too, so you can get out and about easily without taking the car. And where might your outings take you? Well, it’s all about the open air around here: climbing, horse riding, canoeing and shooting are all within five miles, and there’s a golf course less than a mile away. Cyclists can head out on the C2C (Coast to Coast) route from the village, while walkers take strolls along the Keswick to Threlkeld railway line path. More intrepid types can tick off several Lakeland fells nearby, including Skiddaw and Helvellyn as well as Blencathra. Sounds rather like you’ll need time to chill out back on site – and handily there’s plenty of space for that, plus a stream for soothing tired feet. Barbecues are permitted on the pitches, and you’re welcome to bring dogs and kids (there’s a whole lot of field for them to scamper about in). Facilities are on the low-key side, with just showers and toilets (two of each for the ladies and gents) and a washing-up area.

Ik was blij met: We found the campsite to be everything we needed. The barn with toilet and shower facilities was perfect. Easy check in by just texting the campsite owner. Plenty of fields and pitches to choose from.

Ik was blij met: Showers were hot, good washing facilities, plenty of space on the site to spread out. Stone car park by the facilities if you don't want to dive the car through the fields.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Bit muddy at gate entry points but to be expected with the wet weather.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Could do with an extra couple of showers/toilets for the no. of pitches.

Ik was blij met: Where do I start? The owners were lovely, nothing was a bother to them. The scenery was beautiful and plenty of space available for campers. It’s a quiet, lovely site and very peaceful. The toilets and shower blocks were clean and always stocked up. Owners are very helpful and friendly. I have already recommended this site to friends and family!!

Ik was blij met: Views was amazing and with the warm weather it was a great location to stay

Ik was niet zo blij met: It was 1/3 of a mile to the nearest toilet, wash up area or water tap for someone with walking issues this was difficult Dogs run free here out of the 10 seen only 1 was on a lead and I was unable to sleep due to other campers chopping wood next to my tent at 11pm Only 2 toilets so regular que

Ik was blij met: The site was lovely and relaxed with you being able to choose where you pitched up. The facilities where good and fellow campers were friendly. We camped with our dogs and there was lots of space to walk them too. Easy to get to hikes and lakes.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

So, you’ve just arrived, and the kids (or big kids) in your group are raring and ready for adventures. Handily, as well as all the footpaths such as Skiddaw trails (10 minutes’ drive), Catbells trails (15 minutes) and the Helvellyn trails (10 minutes), Keswick (10 minutes) has boat hire, the Kong Adventure Centre with climbing walls, caving activities and outdoor excursions or the Puzzling Place for the ultimate optical illusion. In Whinlatter Forest Park (15 minutes), mountain biking and cycling may be on the cards, or Segwaying, Go Ape and guided alpaca treks… at Aira Force waterfall and Ullswater (15 minutes), there's a gorgeous waterfall trail… while at The Lakes Distillery (20 minutes), on the menu are whisky tours and tastings. If it’s history you’re after, head to the Castlerigg Stone Circle (10 minutes), a historic circle with spectacular views of fells, or the Grade I-listed Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens (15 minutes). After all that, there’s always lots of animals to spot at the Lake District Wildlife Park (20 minutes).
