  • Family-owned Snowdonia site near the shore of Bala Lake
  • A short walk to watersports, boat hire and Bala Lake Railway
  • Within walking distance of Bala’s shops, restaurants and golf course
Got Snowdonia National Park in your sights? You can add a little sailing or windsurfing – and relaxation on a family-run site – into the mix when staying at Pen Y Bont Touring and Camping Park. This peaceful place is just a few hundred metres from the shore of Bala Lake (also known by its Welsh name Llyn Tegid). The fresh air of the Snowdonia National Park is sure to aid that well-awaited relaxation… and when you’re feeling fully rejuvenated (and full of tasty food from the shops and restaurants in Bala town centre, 15 minutes’ walk away), there are activities like sailing, windsurfing and boat hire around the lake. Switch up Bala Lake’s gentle ripples for the whitewater of the Tryweryn at the National White Water Centre, 10 minutes’ drive away. Adventurous souls can zoom down the 1080-metre zipwire at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes’ drive), climb Snowdonia’s mountains or catch a few swells at the surf lagoon at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (50 minutes). If you’d rather move at a more leisurely pace, putting a few holes as you go, there’s a golf course on the other side of Bala, half an hour’s walk away from the site. Spa days and massage treatments are available about 10 minutes' walk away too.

Electric grass tent pitch (large)

Liked: It was a fantastic site which was well featured and nicely laid out with ample-sized pitches for all users from tents to motorhomes and caravans. Reception and check in was quick and friendly from a young lady who obviously enjoyed what she does and couldn’t be more helpful. The site itself is a nice walking distance from Bala lake foreshore and the town itself, plus they have a little shop onsite, so you really do have everything you need for a nice break away in beautiful Wales, close to Snowdonia if you fancy a good hike. The showers / toilets are nice and well maintained / cleaned. The water was hot, but not scalding and there was a hairdryer in the ladies. All-in-all we can’t fault our 2-night stay.

Disliked: Nothing. Absolutely can’t fault!

Liked: This was our maiden journey in our camper van Trev. We felt like we’d hit the jackpot with this site. It was a great location with a nice walk into the town or the lake. The site itself was set on a pet location with was easy to find. Lovely clean facilities and friendly/helpful staff.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch (medium)

Liked: Facilities were 1st class and the site very nicely laid out. Also, the perfect distance to walk into Bala.

Disliked: We were close to the entrance and the road noise, echoing from the farm buildings opposite was a significant spoiler for us

Local attractions

For those days where you can’t be bothered to walk too far, it’s very handy that the station for the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway is just five minutes’ walk away. Views of the water are a given, but count the mountains too: Arenig Fawr, Aran Fawddwy and Aran Benllyn are visible on the route. You may have your sights set on climbing Wales’ tallest mountain, perhaps. If you’re not climbing up Snowdon (an hour's drive) yourself, you might want to take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (an hour and five minutes), which has been making its ascent for over 100 years. A less strenuous trail than the Snowdon climb is the Mawddach Trail, which runs for just under 10 miles from Dolgellau (half an hour), crossing over the gorgeous Barmouth railway bridge on the other end. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (35 minutes) has plenty of trails too, through thick forest this time. You can take them on by mountain bike, standard bicycle or on foot – and there’s bike hire at the forest park.
