Just beautiful!

  • Quiet and rural park in the middle of a two-acre woodland
  • A 20-minute drive from Canterbury and 25 minutes from Margate
  • Barbecues, campfires and dogs allowed; walks straight from the site
Wander the waterways and woodlands of England’s south east from Puddledock Woods Camping, a peaceful wild camping site in two acres of woodland, behind a smallholding and workshop in lush countryside 20 minutes’ drive from Canterbury. Public walks aplenty are around this no-frills site, whether you’d rather amble on pathways through the surrounding trees or towards a particular destination like a Georgian-era inn a 20-minute walk away with its gorgeous setting on the River Stour. The square mile of reed beds, fens, ditches and wet grassland at Stodmarsh National Nature Reserve is also reachable within 20 minutes on foot (or a five-minute drive) for yet more rambling, and the coast is a 15-minute drive away. Whatever you opt for, dogs are welcome to join you at Puddledock Woods; barbecues and small campfires are permitted as well if you’re planning on appeasing the appetite alfresco. The site has indoor and outdoor hot showers, washing-up facilities and a utility room with a kettle, microwave, toaster and fridges (with a freezer compartment). As cars have their own special area slightly away from the site to keep the place as peaceful as possible, the staff at Puddledock Woods Camping can help transport your gear by wheelbarrow from the parking area (just ask for help in advance, using the details in your booking confirmation email).

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (wild, woodland)

Liked: A great place for probably the closest you can get to legal wild camping, it's right in the middle of a woods, plenty of trees to string a hammock, each pitch has it's own place for an open fire, there are picnic benches scattered around, despite its wild camping it has showers, toilets, fresh water, a little shop and so much more.Matt and his team are a really cool, friendly helpful guys.Highly recommended try it I'm sure you'll love it.

Disliked: Nothing, I'll be going back.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (wild, woodland)

Liked: A quirky site with a friendly owner. We loved the woodland pitches, which were private and quiet. The outdoor showers under grapevines were refreshing and lovely. Facilities basic but clean and everything you could need.

Disliked: There are bits of tile and ceramics embedded in the pathway through the woods. It’s a pretty effect but some bits have comes loose so not so safe for small children who can fall and easily cut themselves. Having said that, our kids (3 and 18 months) loved the site, especially the rope swings and looking at the vintage cars.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (wild, woodland)

Liked: Friendly welcome. Choose your own pitch. Handy shop for cold drinks, ice cream, bits you might have forgotten etc at very good prices. 2 fridges, washing up station, phone charging. Lots of little handy extras that made the trip much less stressful. Staff there are lovely, really friendly, kind and helpful. My 5 year old loved the rope swings! Picnic benches and fire pits around the site.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (wild)

Liked: Atmospere, relax, exactly what I was looking for. We had choice loads of sites to pitch our tent, as apposed to somewhere on a field. We were allowed to have our own fire by our tent. The open air showers under a vine was a first for me. Staff was friendly and helpfull. I liked the old cars and other paraphernalia to be found around the camping.

Disliked: A bit pricey maybe, but then everything has become more expensive, so that's hard to tell in the end

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (wild)

Liked: The woodland setting for the pitches was peaceful and shady. Firepits were provided although had holes in which meant some burning wood fell through! Owner was friendly and there was a relaxed policy with few or no rules. Availability of wheelbarrows was useful as you can’t park next to the pitches. There was handwash and loo roll in the toilets.

Disliked: The facilities were grubby and did not look like they had been cleaned properly in a long time. The pull cords for the lights in the toilets were dark brown and the floors were very dirty. There was smelly, stagnant water in a ditch on the entrance track which had various discarded items in such as old toys and footballs. There were lots of mosquitos, probably due to the stagnant ditch.

Local attractions

As well as being pretty, the area around the site is dotted with towns and cities worth perusing – from historic Canterbury to coastal Margate. Try the former to punt down the Stour, roam the Roman walls and take Chaucer-themed tours towards the cathedral; the latter, meanwhile, is home to a sandy beach, the seafront Turner Contemporary gallery and a vintage fairground (25 minutes’ drive away). Even closer than Margate is Herne Bay (15 minutes): head here for salty walks beside the Reculver Towers and Roman Fort on Herne Bay, an old Anglo-Saxon monastery that nods to the region’s history as a dock for ships in the Roman era. Or follow the coast around to Botany Bay (half an hour from Puddledock Woods Camping) to hunt for fossils below the chalk-white cliffs. For very famed white cliffs, Dover (and its ferry ports for France) is a 40-minute drive, while Whitstable and its oysters are 25 minutes away in the other direction. If the kids are needing some solid entertainment, the creatures at Howletts Wild Animal Park and Wingham Wildlife Park are 20 and 15 minutes’ drive away respectively.
