  • An 18-acre wildflower meadow on a 1,000-year-old Isle of Wight farm
  • Good access to the 10-minute walk to Compton Bay
  • Blackgang Chine theme park and Amazon World zoo within half an hour
How many islands are there off the coast of Britain? No-one can agree, but without dispute the biggest and one of the most famed is the Isle of Wight. On the western side of the isle, a five-minute drive from Compton Bay beach and the small village of Freshwater Bay, the land around Compton Farm Caravan and Camping has been farmed since 1086, and it’s still home to cows and chickens. As well as friendly creatures to meet, this family-run site has 18 acres of wildflower meadows for you to stretch out or run about on, as well as views towards the sea, and paths leading across the chalk downs to the coast. There are pubs, cafés and supermarkets within 10 minutes’ drive and barbecues and campfires are permitted back on the site. It’ll be hard to resist the call of the sea, so why bother? It’s a 10-minute walk to reach the coast and its wide sands and safe waters; Compton Bay's a cracking spot too for surfers, new and expert alike. For further waveborne antics, head to Freshwater Bay for kayaking and coasteering around the sea caves, as well as rock climbing up the cliffs.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: We loved how close the campsite was to the beach. The scenery is beautiful and you can start a walk/run right out of your tent. We received such a warm welcome from the owners who even let us borrow an OS map! We had a very relaxing 5 days here, especially due to the lack of signal and wifi - a forced digital detox! Would definitely recommend this campsite to friends.

Disliked: It was great. My only tiny complaint would be the number of bugs/spiders in the bathroom!

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: This was our first holiday to the Isle of Wight and just Wow! The site was easy to find, the owner met us on arrival and gave us all the information we needed about facilities for our stay. Simple camping field with pitches lined up along the hedgerow with stunning views across the hills. Toilet and shower facilities were good and cleanliness maintained whilst we were here. Showers are 50p but I found that lasted a good amount of time and temperature was perfect every time! Small play area for the kids but they absolutely loved it and spent a lot of time there. The 9am tractor ride to feed the farm animals was a lovely surprise, the kids really enjoyed doing this every day and we appreciated the 30mins of peace it provided. The campsite is in a truly beautiful location, short walk to the beach or if you need a dog friendly beach it's about 20 mins walk along the coastal path. Overall this provided the perfect base for us to explore the island and we cannot wait to return. We camp a lot and this was the first time my husband and I said we weren't ready to leave!

Disliked: Nothing.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely farm, loads of large flat pitches which are well spaced out, really friendly people, clean facilities, little play area and lots of space for kids to run about. Great for all types of campers/families young and old. Kids enjoyed a tractor ride round the field to see the animals in the morning. Great location close to ferry (Yarmouth) and loads of beaches/attractions a short drive away

Liked: Loved it here, absolutely stunning location, walking distance from sea side, short drive from few of the best beaches on the island. Sup paradise. Great views from campsite. Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: I mean the location is stunning within walking distance of the beach (albeit you have to navigate some pretty steep steps). I also liked the space and the layout of the pitches, and the self-choice of where you want to locate. If you pitch at the farthest end it means you'll have a fair walk to the toilets and wash facilities. (some savvy campers brought bikes) We also loved the farm Chickens and 2 Turkeys wandering around the farm court yard. Just a shame there was no opportunity to buy fresh eggs.

Disliked: What was disappointing was the surprise announcement that the campsite was having a private party in the adjacent field. When booking, this was not made clear albeit clearly planned. The music was loud until 12pm, and given there were families with young children it wasn't fair or right to have concealed this material fact from their booking site. I'm sure most would have made alternative arrangements given the choice. I will be asking for a refund for that night. The facilities are basic but functional. You do have to have Houdini skills to enter and leave the toilet cubicles as it quite tight. Also, the toilet window is adjacent to the washing up facilities so it can be a little entertaining and close for comfort (possibly unpleasant) for both parties. This is outside the owners control but there was a general odour of urine at the site. This may well be the downside of the distance to the toilet block and folk choosing to relief themselves 'au natural' against the hedgerow. We didn't, as we brought our own facility.

Local attractions

Having stretched your limbs among the meadows back at base, you might be up for longer jaunts. The Isle of Wight Coastal Path will take you on a 70-mile circuit if so, or you can dip your toes in with shorter sections such as the six-mile stretch from Compton Down to the beach, or from Freshwater Bay to the geological chalky spikes that are The Needles. If you’re interested in the island’s lengthy history, head to Newport (25 minutes' drive) for walks round the Roman villa and tours of Carisbrooke Castle, where Charles I was held prisoner. Queen Victoria had a rather nicer time of it at her summer residence, Osborne House (40 minutes), where you can paddle on her private beach and see the miniature Swiss Cottage, where many of the royal children were raised. With a heady mix of rides and slides, dinosaurs, cowboys and pirates, Blackgang Chine Land of Imagination (half an hour) has been a family favourite for 175 years. For something even wilder, it’s the same distance to Amazon World Zoo, where 200-odd rare and exotic beasts await to meet you and your brood.
