Biking, swimming and hiking… that’s just some of the stuff to busy yourself with around Bonham State Park (20 minutes’ drive). For a loop of the lake, follow the shorter trail around the shore and for a lap of the water instead, launch your own watercraft or rent out a paddle boat, kayak or canoe. When it comes to other activities, the huge Lavon Lake (50 minutes) has much more in the way of swimming, biking and boating, with five beaches and hiking and off-road biking trails all around the parks around the water. Captain a boat you wish, as there are boat rentals available here. Seeking out some more good-looking landscapes? There’s lots of wildlife to spot around the treks in the Ladonia Wildlife Management Area (15 minutes), but for fossil hunting grounds in a river canyon, the nearby Ladonia Fossil Park, (20 minutes) is the place to be. In case you’ve caught the fishing bug from the site, and you want to dedicate some more time to your sessions, Largemouth bass and Channel catfish could form part of your haul at the Wolfe City Reservoir (10 minutes).
