Local attractions

Take a walk down Main Street in Deadwood, popping in and out of saloons, casinos, and maybe the Brothel Deadwood, a museum exploring the history of prostitution in the city. On the edge of Deadwood, Tatanka Story of Bison is home to a monumental bronze statue portraying a bison hunt. Completed in 1941, Mount Rushmore National Memorial in Keystone (40 minutes’ drive) depicts four influential American presidents – Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln – carved into the granite. From Mount Rushmore Profile View you get a good picture of Washington’s face, but you can also walk (or drive) around, looking for alternative viewpoints. Wildlife in the Black Hills National Forest (one hour) includes coyotes, elk, and American bison. Birdwatchers have lots to look forward too, with golden and bald eagles often soaring above the area’s grasslands and canyons.
