  • Basic and remote campsite five minutes’ walk from Wastwater in Cumbria
  • Wastwater Alpaca Trekking 25 minutes’ drive; Ravenglass 20 minutes
  • Pop-up pitches on a Lakeland fell farm; direct access to Scafell Pike
If you’re after a spectacular wild camping spot to lay down your head, you’ll certainly find it at Wasdale Lakeside Pop-up Campsite. Set on a working Lakeland farm, this Cumbria pop-up site is big on views, looking up Wasdale to Yewbarrow, and right down to the shores of Wastwater. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join your Lakeland jaunt, but must be kept on a lead at all times as there are always sheep about. You’ll all get lots of exercise, as there are numerous walks into the scenic Wasdale Valley from the camping field. Talking of the camping field, pitch numbers are limited so your wild camping experience can stay a private, peaceful one. Simple amenities run to portable toilets, on-site water in a container, cold running water a short walk from the pitches, recycling and washing lines for drying clothes and wetsuits. Small barbecues are allowed, but please place them on the slates provided. Pick up any vital supplies in Eskdale Stores (15 minutes’ drive), or order takeaways from the Lion and Lamb pub in Gosforth (they’ll deliver to your tent). If you fancy a change of scenery, hotfoot it down to the pubs in Nether Wasdale (10 minutes or half an hour’s walk). Please note there are no showers and no electrical hook-up points at this campsite.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Wonderful location! Fantastic site basic but we had a small camper, so pretty self sufficient. No electric hook up..needed. 5 mins walk to Wasdale water…two wonderful swims! Met some really nice people, including the lovely lady that managed the site, idyllic peaceful and perfect for us!

Disliked: Nothing

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay this weekend at the site. The owner was very friendly, kind and ensured we had everything we needed/best places to walk. Exceptional location with just a 200m walk to Wast Water Lake and on site a vast amount of space for all staying to spread out where you like, which was a treat compared with other sites that over crowd. 100% would recommend staying here 😊

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Wow!! I asked for remote and this place is remote! It's by far the most stunning place I've ever stayed! It was so quiet and peaceful, plenty of space on the field to pitch up where you wanted. The owner was so lovely and friendly. Literally a two minute walk to the lake which is beyond picturesque. I'm just gutted we didn't get a chance to go out onto the lake, the weather just wasn't great. Which was the only downside to our trip. Without a doubt we will be back. It's everything I could have wanted and more. I'm so glad that I've found this hidden gem.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing at all. The owners couldn't have changed the weather which was the only downside!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: - location - it was quiet - clean - friendly owners - kept the toilets clean every day - a lot to do (hiking/water sports) - sheep around neighbouring fields - good value for money - dogs allowed - campfires allowed - choose your own spot - can pay online or in cash once on site The campsite is wonderful, we loved our stay there and have saved this campsite as one to remember as we will be going back again when hiking more mountains in the area. It’s a lovely spot with good connections to hikes and to the lake! Definitely a campsite to remember :)

Disliked: We didn’t dislike anything. There were no showers but this wasn’t a bad thing as it was made clear before us booking. So we knew and were more than okay with that. We used the lake to keep us refreshed! (The only reason I’ve marked wifi as one star is because there isn’t WiFi or signal but this is a good thing! And we love being disconnected from our phones, it’s a back to nature campsite and it’s perfect)

Local attractions

Just five minutes’ stroll from the camping field, Wastwater is a hub for wild swimmers, scuba divers, paddleboarders and kayakers – you can hire gear from the rental shop 10 minutes’ drive away. The lake is also fertile ground for anglers, who can fish for Arctic char, trout and salmon (in season). Hardened hikers have direct access to ventures up Scafell Pike (three hours) from the site. If you’re thinking of less strenuous days out, play a round at Eskdale Golf Course (25 minutes), or take the weight off your feet completely with a train tour of the West Lakes fell and mountain scenery on Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, locally known as ‘La’al Ratty’ (15 minutes). Local kid-friendly options include trotting through the fells with alpacas at Wastwater Alpaca Trekking (25 minutes), or a gentle scramble up Wasdale (an hour and a half’s walk from the site) to the Fairy Pools. The sand-and-shingle beaches at Seascale (25 minutes) and Ravenglass (20 minutes) are both dog-friendly, with lots of rook pools for splashing around in.
