Kipper cabin

Liked: Great wildlife around, red squirrel and woodpecker on the bird feeder outside our window! Foxes, rabbits, and other animals around, and it's a working farm - so mind your dog if you bring one. One or two very minor bits of constructive feedback were well received by owners which is always a good sign! Pub in walking distance, good food and dog friendly. No signal at cabin but that's a good thing to me!

Disliked: Really minor points - brush but no dustpan for woodburner provided (we improvised), overhead light didn't work (plenty of lamps though), and quite a lot of flies, moths, and cobwebs inside despite keeping things closed, but that's nature!

Unpowered grass tent site (riverside)

Liked: The campsite is awesome - amazing views, immaculate shower and toilet block. We both have kids (who weren't with us), but it would have also been great for them with the little park. The washing up facilities and food prep room were also fantastic, as was the little shop on site. Definitely will be back.

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Nice place, seemed safe. Friendly staff

Disliked: Heater was broken in our pod the first night. Barely got any sleep and it was freezing. After pointing it out the morning after, a portable heater was offered but no compensation/voucher/partial refund was offered for the troubles of the night before. There are microwaves available but absolute no stoves, oven, dishes, mugs available. So it is rather hard to make your own food unless you've taken everything with you There was negligible cellular coverage there and wifi was only available at their reception/shop room, nowhere else.

Local attractions

Ullswater is the nearest of the lakes at 10 minutes’ drive away, so that’s as good a place to start as any – stop by at Aira Force waterfall on your way down there, then get down to the lake itself for waterside walks, steamer cruises and various watersports – or even a wild swim if you’re feeling brave. Over on the banks of Derwentwater, Keswick (15 minutes’ drive) is another good place to explore, with a brewery, The Puzzling Place and the Derwent Pencil Museum as well as boat trips and paddleboards to hire. Walkers of all varieties have much to choose from around here, from gentle lakeside wanders to uphill scrambles at Blencathra and Helvellyn, both of which are close by. The folk on the farm are happy to suggest routes to suit – or point you towards the likes of Dalemain Mansion (15 minutes), Mirehouse & Gardens (20 minutes) or Lowther Castle (25 minutes) for stately-home strolls.
