  • Peaceful site on a farm five minutes' drive from Bassenthwaite
  • Spectacular views over Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw
  • Distillery and wildlife park within a few minutes' drive
Let’s face it, if you’re off to the Lake District you’re likely to be looking for lots of chances to look at lakes. So put a big tick in that box for Irton House Farm, a peaceful place where watery views can be had without even leaving your pitch. And it’s not just any old lake that forms the backdrop here: you’ll be looking out over Bassenthwaite, one of the area’s largest and loveliest (and in a region of pretty stiff competition too). Being a farm site, you’ll share those views with the resident sheep and chickens, but around the sizeable site there's plenty of space to relax or to run about and play games. (Not outdoor-games weather? Retreat to the games room for pool and table tennis.) As scenic as that outlook is, you’ll not be wanting to limit yourself to just the one lake, so it’s handy that there are plenty more within easy reach. Buttermere, Derwentwater and Crummock Water are all within a half-hour drive, as is the Solway coast if you fancy a blast of sea air with your aquatic views. Getting out for a walk or a bike ride is pretty straightforward on local paths, and you can safely get all mucky knowing that a bike wash and free heated shower block await your return. Post-activity pubs and grub can be had five minutes away in Bassenthwaite or with a slightly longer drive to Cockermouth.

Liked: Lovely campsite with a beautiful view. We loved the wheelbarrows and the animals on the farm. Hot showers and clean washing up area. Easy to find and easy reach to lakes/hikes etc Plenty of field space for the children to play on. We are looking forward to returning in the near future.

Liked: Fantastic location with great views. Small site with a few pitches on 2 fields so felt very small. Great toilet blocks - modern and very clean. We really loved our stay and we’ll definitely visit again.

Orchard powered grass tent site (medium, two person)

Liked: Loved everything! Third time going back to Irton House Farm. We've been with family and friends and on our own. The most spectacular views no matter what time or where you are on there. I'm excited to see the new added feature which is hopefully completed by September. The new astro terf pitches that have been added and updates around the farm make a massive difference. It's perfect for families or couples. They have disabled access and amenities. Lovely and clean and the owners are lovely and generally working on the farm so if you need anything they are there.

From the manager: Thanks for returning to Irton House and thanks for sharing your detailed review with everyone on Pitchup. Great photos. It is a pleasure to have you stay on our pitches and look forward to seeing you again soon.

From the manager: I sometimes think the chickens should have their own Facebook page, as they seem to good everywhere. Great review thank you.

Orchard powered grass tent site (large, five person)

Liked: Where to begin, liked that all pitches were on astroturf - other campsites could learn from this! Made things much easier when packing up. The location was idyllic, not too far from town and the views were excellent. A beautiful river walk just minutes from the campsite kept the dog cool in the heat. Toilets were clean all weekend, and done to a nice standard. (although only 4 toilets, we never queued to use them) We booked to use the hot-tub on the Sunday and where it's situated meant we could take our dog as it was in an enclosed area so he could free roam - the hot-tub and prosecco package is worth it for the views alone.

From the manager: Brilliant and detailed review thanks. Good to hear you enjoyed everything and that the hot tub/swim spa added something extra to your celebrations.

Paddock powered grass tent or campervan site (large)

Liked: Fantastic views of Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw. Very well kept site run by very friendly and hard work owners. Good standard of washroom/toilet and pot cleaning facilities. A great place to stay in the north lakes with good road links to Keswick, Cockermouth and surrounding area. We were very lucky that there was only us and a couple of other groups onsite, but they all said it had been very full over the bank holiday weekend. Be mindful that there are limited toilet and shower facilities so pick the right time of day for a wash and brush up. Extremely clean too.

Disliked: No complaints for me.

Liked: Warm and Friendly welcome. A bottle of wine as a gift to compensate for noise coming from improvement to site facilities. Genuinely disabled friendly facilities. Well managed and cared for site. Set in a stunningly beautiful location. Best toilets and showers ever encountered. Owners go out of their way to provide for needs of clients.

Disliked: Rain

Local attractions

It’s all about getting outdoors around here – there are walks galore through the area’s stunning scenery (not just lakes but also fells, forests and mountains). Routes are around for all abilities, from accessible ‘miles without stiles’ walks through to scrambles up Skiddaw (the 931-metre peak is 20 minutes’ drive from the farm). Put your boots aside for a while to favour other activities – head to Whinlatter Forest Park (20 minutes' drive) for mountain biking, Derwentwater (20 minutes) for kayaking and trout fishing, or Cockermouth Golf Club (10 minutes) for a round or two. If you’ve got the kids with you, you may like to take a trip to the Lake District Wildlife Park; if not, a dram at the Lakes Distillery or a tour of Jennings Castle Brewery may be on the cards. And of course it’s always worth making a point of visiting the Derwent Pencil Museum, 15 minutes away in Keswick.
