  • Farm animals, rope swings and on-site farm shop; pub/café half a mile
What a bewitching place. And most especially for kids: Wookey Farm, a couple of miles from the famed Wookey Hole Caves (and their famed witch), is a tiptop option for small sorts and their owners, with loads of space to run around and a menagerie of animals to coo over. Older offspring will be sizzling with excitement on hearing that they can stoke flames and get social at the communal campfire area, while bigger folk will probably be content to bring along a firepit and laze idly on the family pitch, taking in the views of the Mendip Hills and towards Hembury and Yarley hills… Off site, it's three and a half miles from the farm to cutely compact Wells, six miles to Glastonbury, and a drive of 45 minutes to the coast at Weston-super-Mare. The site is on a small, family-run goat farm where guests are most welcome to meet the menagerie (sheep, pigs, hens and a donkey live here too) and find out all about running a farm. All pitches are in a level two-and-a-half-acre space with marked pitches or in an overflow meadow bordered by the River Axe: you can opt to be as mixed in or as far away as you like. Splashing, paddling and critter spotting can all be had in the river, as can back and forthing merrily on the rope tyre swing over the water (more swings are around the site if this seems slightly too hair-raising). Wookey Farm is an eco-friendly site, with emphasis on keeping things as natural as possible. Facilities are basic but well kept: four compost toilets and washbasins, cleaned twice a day; a washing-up area with water tap alongside; and plenty of facilities for sorting your rubbish (recycling and food waste contributions are keenly welcomed). For those barbecue supplies, the farm is just down the lane from Wookey village's café, shop and three pubs. There's also an on-site farm shop selling the farm's own goat's cheese, goat's milk and meat, along with alcohol, snacks and gifts.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked: We loved being able to see the animals and we liked the amount of space in the meadow. We didn't go in the shop but it looked nice and nice that you could order pastries for breakfast although we didn't do this as we had to leave early. We also liked the recycling area with separate containers for different waste.

Disliked: We chose the site as it was marketed as a family-friendly site so we thought it would be quiet in the evening but sadly some of the other campers staying the same night as us were playing music quite loudly which completely destroyed our enjoyment - we go camping to get away into the countryside and want to be able to hear the birds singing but the music drowned this out and meant we were unable to relax. Music also continued after 8pm which is the quiet hours. This isn't the campsite's fault but I do feel that if you are going to be a quiet site you should firstly make this more obvious to people and potentially police this. Site is also right next to a trail bike track and the bikes were quite noisy the evening we stayed although they stopped by 8pm. Compost toilets would be better for sawdust to throw over as we've had at other sites as this helps manage the smell and makes them more appealing.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked: The atmosphere was lovely, from the chalkboard with our names on, directing us to the field we were in, the name of the farm in bamboo sticks written on the fence, the animals, all the information available! It was thoroughly delightful, clean, fantastic owners and staff who were friendly and informative and all with smiling faces! It was a great break and we will definitely be back! Loved all the little touches, fuseball table outside the cafe and some toys to play with, being able to feed some of the animals, a pop up bar, pastries ordering etc, so many thoughtful extras! Added bonus was the hot air balloons landing in the field and all the children being able to help fold away and get a going the basket! Kudos to Sarah and team for allowing the emergency landing on the field and allowing the support vehicles the access (another farmer nearby not so accommodating!) all round just a wonderful weekend!

Disliked: Maybe the cafe and shop could be open longer but totally appreciate it’s a working farm so perhaps not able to do this.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked: A great little campsite we were in a campervan and the field was nice and level and not boggy even though it had been raining. The compost toilets were nice and clean with plenty of toilet paper and hand soap available. We loved seeing the donkeys Teddy and Choco, all the goats and especially the pigs!! The little information signs were great to read as well. The farm shop was good just a bit hit and miss with the opening time but we did buy some lovely goats cheese. Its a nice easy 10 min walk to the village pub The Ring O Bells which serve great food/beers ar reasonable prices. Also very handy for a trip to Wookey Hole which we did during our stay. Would highly recommend this campsite and we will definitely be staying again!

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

The farm is within easy reach of many top spots as well as Wookey Hole Caves, Glastonbury, Wells and Weston-super-Mare: spectacular Cheddar Gorge is 20 minutes' drive away, Longleat and Bath within 50, and Bristol just under an hour. Quieter times await around the region's walks, such as along the 30 miles of the West Mendip Way running from Wells via Wookey to the sea at Uphill, or the Strawberry Line (also 30 miles), a traffic-free route across Somerset from Shepton Mallet to Clevedon. Closer to home, amble along the River Axe flowing through the farm. Till ringers and fashion fans should take their wallets to Clarks Village, 20 minutes away, for outlet shopping and the Shoe Museum.
