  • Well-maintained and green site five miles from the Suffolk coast
  • Lake and nature trail on site
  • On-site village shop and off-licence; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Travel five miles inland from the sunny Suffolk coastline and you’ll arrive at this little gem on the outskirts of Wenhaston. The gorgeous, well-maintained grounds at this smart site are just part of the attention to detail all around the park, which has been carefully laid out by the friendly and helpful owners. There's greenery all around here: this small and pretty site has its own nature trail and lake, and is surrounded by acres of countryside for hikes and rambles. If walking isn't your thing, hire bikes from the Southwold Bike Centre (20 minutes' drive away) to pedal around the flats of Suffolk; horse riding's pretty popular in the area too, or you could go golfing at Halesworth Golf Club five minutes' drive away. Taking things (much easier), the local pub is a 10-minute walk down the road. Heathside Caravans has a village shop and an off-licence on site for those holiday essentials, and a well-maintained shower block for guests' use. For more supplies. the village of Halesworth is under 15 minutes' drive away and Aldeburgh, Snape and Beccles are all within half an hour.

FHU grass campsite

Liked: Nice size pitch and almost level. Easy to find site and lovely friendly staff Lots of space if you have children although my family in the shepherds huts said the beds we’re not comfortable. Very clean toilet and shower facilities

Disliked: Several dogs running around loose. Would prefer if dogs were on leads unless supervised by their owners

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We have a policy that all dogs should be kept on a lead at all times!!

FHU grass campsite

Liked: Beautiful setting. Well kept pitches. Lovely walks in surrounding area and a fabulous pub nearby - The Star Inn. Good shop with very friendly shopkeeper.

Disliked: Thought we'd booked a superpitch but only even numbered pitches had water tap and waste outlet actually on the pitch. Pitches weren't very level - had to go up on chocks on one side. Only one men's toilet on the whole site!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: All 16 super pitches have have a hook up to electric, water, TV and grey water waste, there are eight double columns per every two pitches. Sorry but there are two toilets an urinal for the men.

FHU grass campsite

Liked: The hosts and staff on site were all friendly and nothing was too trouble. The owner even offered to help with putting up the tent. Plenty of space and well kept site. Lovely little nature reserve. Small well stocked shop on site.

Disliked: It still has plenty of untapped potential with the size of the property. It needs better showers, with shelves or storage space whilst you shower.

Local attractions

After all the walking, cycling, horse riding and golfing, get stuck into the area's history at the 12th-century fortress of Framlingham Castle, half an hour's drive away. Once the refuge of Mary Tudor, this fab place now has exhibitions, themed trails and an audio tour covering its centuries of history: enough to keep young Horrible Histories fans entertained too. Arty sorts will know that Suffolk is Constable country: if this is you, come armed with camera or paintbox to snap and sketch the countryside, harbour and coastal views around the area. You could also take a trip to art complex the Snape Maltings on the Alde river, for events, activities and evening entertainment in the concert hall. Seaside? But of course. Have a stroll around Southwold and its colourful beach huts, or drive half an hour north to Lowestoft for seaside amusements and Pleasurewood Hills, a nifty tucked away theme park with rollercoasters and attractions for all. Walberswick beach, around a 15-minute drive from Heathside, is a popular spot for crabbing. If you’re staying at Heathside for a while, set off early and spend the whole day on the Norfolk Broads (about an hour and 15 minutes' drive north, or drive south for around an hour and a half to the villages of Long Melford and Lavenham with their medieval timber-framed houses.
