  • Five-minute drive from Balaton Uplands; 20 to winery, Szigliget Castle
  • Watersports, beach, fishing, massages and hairdresser all on site
Skimming over the lake’s surface, splashing about by the shore and, with luck, lazing in the sun… Sounds pretty fab, right? If yes, make your way to Balatontourist Camping Napfény, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Révfülöp in Veszprém county. On the shores of Lake Balaton, this site is well placed for watery escapades. It’s an easy wander from pitches to the grassy area next to the lake where there’s plenty of room for catching some rays; learning how to windsurf is as simple as hopping on a rented board, and fishing is a quick cast away. There’s plenty more to keep the family busy too if days in and out of the water are beginning to bore: football and beach volleyball can get active types back on side, and miniature golf is to hand for a little healthy competition. Fancy getting pampered instead? Make time for a massage to manage knots or wander along to the on-site hairdresser and barber to manage locks. Staying nourished through all this is a cinch too: a café by the beach will sort snacky cravings and a bigger restaurant will look after dinner, and there’s a shop stocking essentials too if having a self-catering evening is on the cards – cooking on barbecues or campfires is fine.

Local attractions

If the water isn’t beckoning, turn instead towards the forests and hills of Balaton Uplands National Park, five minutes’ drive from base. There are plenty of hikes and bike rides (cycle hire on site) to follow here, and the less athletically inclined can visit the buffalo reserve, folk house, sand quarry or one of the caves. Don't miss the Káli Basin either – many say it's the most stunning landscape of the Lake Balaton northern shore. Head for history? There’s plenty hereabouts to satisfy: the nearby towns of Balatonfüred and Tihany (both around 25 minutes) have museums and abbeys to explore, and Szigliget and Kinizsi castles are both within 20 minutes if hulking fortresses are a draw. A little further afield, Sümeg Castle is a must for its knights on horseback, jousts and medieval feasts. With kids in tow, a day or two of diversion may be needed and, for that, there’s a waterpark just outside Balatonfüred and an amusement park a little under an hour away. Grownups might prefer to have a tipple at a vineyard or two – luckily, three are within half an hour. So far, so countryside… Anyone in need of a city day instead can make the 45-minute drive to Veszprém, where there’s a zoo, palace, puppet theatre and (of course) shops. Not enough? Capital city Budapest is a little under two hours from the site.
