Deluxe pod with a sheltered firepit area

  • Quiet and contemporary wooden pods two miles from the Jurassic coast
  • A five-minute drive from Charmouth Beach; 10 minutes from Lyme Regis
  • Communal barbecue and firepit area, plus seating on your own decking
Creeping off to the Jurassic coast in search of fossils and crazily scenic stretches of coastal path? Your search for a place to stay can stop at The Tunnel Pods, two miles from the coast. This place is home to a bunch of contemporary wooden pods that are just five minutes' drive from Charmouth beach and 10 minutes from Lyme Regis (two hot fossil-hunting spots with plenty to keep you entertained). It's a cosy sort of place here, surrounded by Dorset’s stunning rural landscape. The wooden cabins are in operation year-round and they have been handcrafted to include full insulation, a double-glazed window and mains electricity (meaning you have full use of the pod’s small heater and a kettle for your all-important morning caffeine). With decked seating and grass outdoors, feel free to get in all the fresh air you wish. When a barbecue or a firepit seems fitting, the pod enclosure has a sheltered seating area with an open fire and a communal barbecue. Hand-chopped logs are tied up in bagged bundles and available for a small cost – there’s a small honesty box provided. As for your adventures across the Jurassic coast, walking routes and attractions can all be found locally. There’s easy access to the A35 for action further afield too – perhaps the lively market town of Bridport, 15 minutes’ drive away, or Seaton’s heritage attractions 20 minutes’ drive to the west? Back at your burrow, there’s a communal shower block with two separate toilet units and two separate shower units (and a wash bin and mirror in each), plus two sheltered washing-up sinks and a drinking water point around the side of the block.

Camping pod (deluxe, bunk beds)

Liked: Only 5 pods so feels exclusive and quiet. Good location. We drove to Lyme Regis and Sidmouth folk festival. Axminster for Tesco superstore. Clean showers and washing up area. We used the en-suite toilet in Willlow Pod. Pods nice and clean.

Disliked: Double bed in WIllow Pod is super uncomfortable. You can feel the coil springs sticking into you. I recommend management lie on the bed and see just how uncomfortable it is. I would only sleep here again if they replaced the bed or put on a thick mattress topper. Camp bunk bed was super creaky! We adults ended up sleeping in the bunk bed (as the double was so uncomfortable) and the kids on the double. Thankfully we brought our own self inflating mattresses to go on the creaky camp bed to make it more comfortable, otherwise it would be just canvas you're sleeping on.

Camping pod (classic)

Liked: Clean, functional pod with outdoor seating area and comfortable beds. The site was intimate and private. Great easy access to Lyme Regis and Charmouth.

Disliked: The noise from the road was constant. Ear plugs helped at night. The camp bed for the smaller child was very basic, where the other beds had proper mattresses.

Camping pod (classic)

Liked: Neat and clean, nice toilets, showers and washing up. Good base for visiting the fossil beaches.

Disliked: Be aware this is right next to the A35, so a LOT of traffic noise. Only a small place attached to an outdoor activity centre, so no campsite atmosphere, if that's what you're looking for!

Camping pod (classic)

Liked: Clean, good showers, loos an washing up areas. Nice to have a proper bed when camping. Very small camp I think only 5 pods on site which is nice.

Disliked: It did smell of mildew/damp in the pod and we could hear the main road mostly just because we needed the window cracked open due to the damp smell.

Local attractions

You really don’t have to go far for a little adrenaline. In fact, it’s just a one-minute walk to get to The Tunnel Tree Tops Charmouth, where there's a high ropes obstacle course and zipwires tying together the treetops. If getting a birds' eye view and some monkey-style entertainment isn’t enough, The Tunnel Training (also one minutes’ walk) runs shooting experiences. If finding fossils is high on your Jurassic coast bucket list, you’ll be pleased to find that the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre (five minutes’ drive or 45 minutes’ walk) runs fossil hunting walks to kickstart your hunt. Take some time to check out the displays, marine tanks and theatre too. The Jurassic coast is well-suited to especially adventurous sorts, and a Lyme Bay RIB Charter (15 minutes) is certainly one adventurous way to take in the cliffs. Inland, the heritage Seaton Tramway (15 minutes' drive) will also get you out in the Axe Valley and nature reserves (where there’s plenty of excellent birdlife to spy on).
