  • Simple pitches behind a West Sussex country pub
  • A 15-minute drive from Horsham; half an hour to the South Downs
  • Friendly pub with homemade food, beer garden and play area
Country walk, nice pub dinner, couple of drinks, very short walk back to your bed… if that sounds like a top way to spend a day, get yourselves over to the pitches behind The Blue Ship, a rural West Sussex pub just under 10 minutes’ drive from Billingshurst. The pitches here are on the basic side (toilets are provided, but not showers) but they’re very well placed for rural walks and bike rides. Nearby trails run alongside rivers or canals and through little villages, and there’s easy access to the Downs Link route not far away too. Families and dogs are welcome on site, making it a splendid spot for a weekend away in the countryside, walks with the dog included and all. If you catch yourself in the mood for a bit of alfresco cooking, it's good to know that barbecues are permitted on the pitches (although please note that disposable foil barbecues are not permitted). Bilingshurst should have most of the supplies you need, and bigger Horsham is about 15 minutes’ drive away for the pickier eateries. That said, the prospect of an evening in the pub is likely to be enticing too – it’s got a good menu of homemade dishes (including desserts and weekly specials) and an equally tempting range of drinks including cask ales. All of this is rightly popular, so booking is essential if you want to dine in the pub for lunch or dinner. In sunny weather, the beer garden (with a play area) is the place to be for an alfresco drink or two.

Liked: The Blue Ship Inn is quite a find hidden in the country side, we ate good food we drank good wine, watched bats overhead as day turned to night. We would highly recommend for those wanting convenience of camping next to a pub run by a family who are brilliant!

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: Peaceful, and taking our rubbish home, we thought this a really good idea to make campers think about the amount of rubbish used.

Disliked: It was bank holiday weekend and the ladies half of the unisex toilets didn't have toilet paper or a toilet brush. Very difficult to keep the toilets clean. Wasn't happy about paying £4.50 for a lime and soda. Not having a dedicated pitch as when we went out we weren't able to return to the same spot . No access to public transport and no Wifi

Liked: The camping field is lovely, and the space in the middle is perfect for playing games. The toilets are always in pristine condition, and the close proximity of the pub is great. The hosts are always super friendly and come round to make sure everything is OK, , even now they have their gorgeous new addition to their family. And they make a fuss of our dog, so he loves coming too, not that we took him this time (1 year old twins was enough ) There are also so many lovely walks on the doorstep, we find it the perfect getaway. It's definitely one of our favourite places to camp.

Liked: Nice pitch kept clear in the centre so not overcrowded.Nice little pub, didn’t eat there but the food looked good.Nice and quiet at night .

Disliked: Never seen so many signs, they’re everywhere. No bins .

From the manager: Thank you for visiting and for taking the time to write a review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay over all and hope to welcome you again soon. **A side note re bins for anyone reading this, we clearly state in our listing on Pitch Up and in our pre arrival info that is emailed to all guests, that we don't provide rubbish disposal and that all rubbish must be taken home. We also clearly explain the reason for this in terms of the ever increasing cost of commercial waste disposal and that this would result in us having to increase our pitch rates, we choose to keep pitch rates lower and affordable for everyone and ask people to take their rubbish home with them on departure. We could not make this clearer and this is signposted in the campsite as well as other signs you mention which are all driven by health and safety to ensure the well being and safety of our guests - mainly signs with regard to firepit safety (which are also an insurance requirement) and signs directing guests upon arrival, all of which are necessary to ensure the campsite runs smoothly, safely and that the central area and gateways are kept clear. We can only apologise if guests find safety and informative signs offensive in some way. Best Wishes Sophie.

From the manager: The campsite and pub are exactly as described in our listing. We are a small country pub with a rural basic campsite, I’m not sure what your expectations outside of this were. As you will see from other reviews this weekend, everyone loved the pub. It was gorgeous weather, we were fully booked for dinner and it was a lovely atmosphere in the welcomed sunshine. The lights in the toilets I do apologise for. This was our first weekend open for camping this season, the lights have a fault on them, my husband tried to fix them but there is a loose connection which requires taking the lights down, unfortunately he did not have time to do so prior to opening primarily due to the birth of our son last week so time was not on our side as I hope you can appreciate on this occasion. We hope you find a pub and campsite more to your liking and can only apologise that you felt our establishment not to your liking on this occasion. Best wishes Sophie.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Really clean site, toilet block was clean. Good communication from site. Had a few other guests but nicely spaced out pitches

Disliked: The gate could be easier to use as if pulled forwards it wants to swing closed which as solo traveller hard to pin back to drive in. If pushed back has to be lifted up which fine for me but is awkward

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for visiting and for taking the time to write a review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and hope to welcome you again soon. With regard to the gate, I think perhaps you pushed this the wrong way, the ground rises in to the campsite so yes you would have to life it if it is opened that way. It opens outwards with ease as the ground drops that way and there is a cone to put in front of the gate as you drive through to ensure it stays open. Our apologies if this was not clear and that you found this difficult upon arrival. Best Wishes Sophie.

Local attractions

With the South Downs National Park (half an hour’s drive) so straightforward to get to from The Blue Ship, your packing list might need to include hiking boots for trails like the South Downs Way and a camera to snap pics of the sloping hills and river valleys. To fuel those adventures in the South Downs, fill yourself up with a few tasty treats from the market town of Horsham (15 minutes). The energy will also come in handy for the walking and cycling trails that weave their way around Knepp Castle Estate (20 minutes), a gorgeous castle setting with an eco-friendly rewilding project. Or perhaps you’re keen to potter around more historical places. Loxwood Joust (15 minutes) is a medieval jousting festival that runs on select dates. Otherwise, get into the Victorian spirit around Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (half an hour), a Grade I-listed building with a Victorian garden, a dollhouse museum and wine tastings. When it’s time for a few classic seaside activities like paddleboarding and strolls along the prom, Worthing (40 minutes) is a very worthy spot.
