Local attractions

Pangani (two and three quarter hours’ drive), at the mouth of the river of the same name, was once a bustling Swahili trading centre. These days you can stroll through its peaceful streets, checking out crumbling colonial structures, the old jail and the former German administration building. The museum in Bagamoyo (five hours) displays exhibits from when the town was an important port trading slaves and ivory. Bagamoyo was also the capital of German East Africa, and German sites include the colonial administration headquarters and a graveyard. The remains of explorer David Livingstone were temporarily laid to rest in the Anglican Church before being transported to London. The seafront Kaole Ruins (five hours) include mosques, buildings and tombs dating from between the 1200s and the 1500s. This Swahili settlement south of Bagamoyo was abandoned after the abolition of the slave trade.
