Action-packed days followed by easy eats and somewhere comfy to sleep? If that sounds like quite the winning combo, take your break at Vodatent at Break Out Grunopark, a lakeside site five minutes’ drive from Harkstede and around 15 minutes from the centre of Groningen. Even the most demanding of active types should be pretty pleased with the range of activities right on site here: don wetsuits to get out on the lake for days of waterskiing, flyboarding and other water-based thrills, or stick to dry land for climbing, archery, paintballing and escape room games. Having all of these top-notch activities right there on site is, of course, particularly fine news for those whose travelling party features a mix of activity-seekers and those who are really in it for the sitting-down opportunities. These latter are not forgotten: there’s plenty of space around the place to chill out by the lake or learn vital new skills with a beer tasting session and chocolate workshop. There’s plenty of scope to chill out back at your digs, too: stays here are in smart safari tents that are fitted out with comfy beds, a dining table and a handy mobile kitchen stuffed full of all the bits you need to make your meals. Supplies for feasts (or drinks evenings out on your deck) can be picked up at the supermarket in Harkstede; if your activity schedule doesn’t allow for such trips, there’s plenty of tasty grub over at the site’s waterside restaurant, which serves up everything from sandwiches to fancier dishes of carpaccio and spare ribs.

Local attractions

Still in the market for a bit more activity? Set up a battle at Target Lasergame (15 minutes’ drive), take to the treetops at Adventurepark Waddenfun (half an hour), take the nippers to the outdoor play area at Sprookjeshof Zuidlaren (20 minutes) or head out for hikes and bike rides in the Drentsche Aa National Park (25 minutes). Time to calm things down a little bit? Take a stroll around the centre of Groningen (15 minutes) to see the Martini Tower (which you can climb if you insist on packing in more activity), browse the stalls at the Fish Market, wander the Prinsentuin gardens and sip beer at the Martinus Brewery. There are plenty of splendid museums around the area too: head to the Groninger Museum for fab modern architecture and an equally excellent contemporary art collection, or delve into the city’s seafaring past at the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum. A little out of town (25 minutes) is a chance to step into the shoes of the locals at the International Klompenmuseum, which displays clogs both classic and couture.
