Think you’ve left that to-do list behind when you exit the office to head off on hols? Book a break at Camping De La Vallée and you’re frankly very much mistaken: there’s heaps to do here, and certainly plenty to fill many a day. The good news, of course, is that the list of activities that awaits at this friendly Pyrénées-Orientales site is rather more pleasing than that you’ll leave behind. Your daily schedule will most likely kick off with picking up the fresh bread that’s just been delivered for breakfast. And then it may go on to feature (in no particular order) games of volleyball, pétanque or football, a ramble down to the river for some fishing, and a cooling swim in the pool. If you’re here in the hols, you may well also wish to factor in time for the archery sessions, gym classes, sports tournaments and kids’ crafts that run by day, and the themed dinners, dancing, shows and astronomy gatherings that fill the evenings. And all this before you’ve even ventured off site – perhaps for horse riding, mountain hikes, canyoning, beach days, trips to Collioure or Perpignan… Well on the way to weariness? Settle back at base with something from the library while the nippers entertain themselves at the playground or games room. And you’ll be needing eats and drinks to fuel all these escapades, of course – stay in for meals at the bar-restaurant or take the 10-minute trot to Saint-Jean-Pla-de-Corts for cafés, restaurants and shops.

Local attractions

As enticing as the on-site antics are, it’s a wise idea to budget some time for the surrounds too. The folks on site often run active outings including waterskiing, canyoning, horse riding and guided hikes, and there are lots of places to head out for a walk nearby (you are in the scenic foothills of the Pyrenees, after all). The inflatable obstacles on the lake at Aquajump and the canopy trails at Les Aventuriers De St Jean (both 10 minutes by car) are perennially popular with energetic small sorts; grownups seeking something more serene may prefer to mosey round the musical instrument and modern art museums 15 minutes away in Céret. Head towards the coast for half an hour to stretch out on the beach at Argelès Plage, or follow famed footsteps to arty Collioure, a pretty fishing village that inspired Picasso, Matisse and Charles Rennie Mackintosh among others. Perpignan (also half an hour away) is another excellent place for a day out, strolling the streets of its colourful old town and visiting its historic sights like the Palace of the Kings of Majorca.
