  • Private and secure family-friendly site in scenic Alajuela
  • A 35-minute drive from the Costa Rican capital, San José
  • Paradise for hikers and bikers: two national parks within easy reach
Do you dream of exploring the rainforests, having daring escapades on volcanoes and fuelling your adrenaline needs on whitewater rivers? Park up for your hols at Pura Van Campsite, a family-friendly site in the town of La Garita in the San José area of Alajuela province. Pura Van's a prime jumping off point for exploring the volcanoes, rainforest and cities of Costa Rica – Volcán Poás and Braulio Carrillo national parks are around an hour’s drive from the site for challenging hiking and biking, and the bars, restaurants, museums, galleries and tourist sites of capital city San José are about half an hour away. If you’re at a loss for what to do, the site is in the grounds of a campervan rental centre, so the owners are well informed on local areas worth visiting and happy to advise you or organise tours. Eyelids drooping after all this activity? You’re in the right country… Make your way to Doka Estate, 40 minutes from Pura Van, for a tour of the coffee plantation – and pick up a steaming hot mug of the black stuff while you’re there. Obviously you can’t live on coffee for your entire break (even if you wish you could), so bag some supplies from the shop across the road and grill them up on the shared barbecue or in the small kitchen... then settle down for serene times among the fruit trees. If you want a break from cooking, there are plenty of restaurants within 20 minutes of the site.

Local attractions

Active types staying at Pura Van Campsite should head to Volcán Poás and Braulio Carrillo national parks to get their hike or bike on, zip to Canopy Adventure Volcán Barva for some ziplining, go river rafting, canyoning, rappelling or tubing with Costa Rican Trails, or swim on over to the Gulf of Nicoya for watersports and fishing – all within around an hour’s drive. After a more sedate experience during your getaway? Start with a leisurely stroll around Botanical Orchid Garden La Garita, five minutes away, then make your way into San José to wander the streets, visit museums and galleries, poke around street markets and try out some of the local craft brews. The kids may not be particularly receptive to following their parents around a bunch of breweries for the entire hol, so put some stuff on the list for them: the animal rescue and conservation park, ZooAve, is 10 minutes from the site, and Parque Diversiones amusement park is 25 minutes away. If they’re up for a longer journey, Balneario Las Musas and Parque Acuático Villas Fantasía waterparks are both under an hour from Pura Van.
