  • In Austria’s Alpine region, on the banks of the River Salza
  • Activity centre on site for rafting, canyoning and canoeing
  • Restaurant, bar, shop, hot tub rental and laundry facilities on site
Spectacularly scenic Alpine stay sound like your sort of thing? Make tracks for Camping Saggraben, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the Styrian village of Landl. In Eisenwuzen Nature Park and on the banks of the River Salza, this site is indeed well-placed for such a stay. Within half an hour's drive of Kalkalpen and Gesäuse National Parks, and just 10 minutes from the Wasserlochklamm hiking area, this is a top spot for getting out and about on rambling and climbing explores. As the site has its own outdoor centre, with rafting, kayaking, canoeing and canyoning to sample, water-based adventures may be preferable. If so, guests can hire boats and equipment on site if forging ahead alone, or sign up for tours to benefit from a local’s expertise. After long days of battling rapids or clambering up Alpine slopes, pamper muscles in the mobile hot tub, which can be hired on site. Laundry facilities are in place too, for when myriad adventures are a little bit messy. Keep energies up with regular pitstops in the on-site restaurant – which has a bar and takeaway service – or visit the small shop, which stocks local sustainable products, to buy supplies for self-catering in the shared kitchen.

Local attractions

Given the high-energy nature of this site’s outdoor centre, perhaps first forays off site should be best spent unwinding at the Ybbstaler Solebad spa, 20 minutes’ drive from base. Those looking for a simpler, back-to-basics kind of activity might prefer to pass a few hours at the Landl swimming pond (15 minutes away) instead, while anyone who wants to be kept busier can opt for a trip to Sankt Gallen waterpark (20 minutes). Get a feel for the history of the area by travelling to the 13th-century Gallenstein Castle (20 minutes) for evenings of music and literature, by learning all about the Austrian forestry trade at the Silvanum Forest Museum (five minutes), or by visiting the largest monastic library in the world at Admont Abbey (35 minutes). Planning on visiting during the colder months? The site is less than 25 minutes from Hochkar skiing area, so it's pretty straightforward to hit the slopes.
