  • Quiet back-to-basics camping on a working farm in Grange-over-Sands
  • A five-minute drive to Cartmel; 20 minutes to Windermere
  • Dog-friendly site with Morecambe Bay views
At a peaceful countryside location with outstanding views over Morecambe Bay, Low Fell Gate Farm Campsite is a back-to-basics spot for those of you who like to get off grid but remain reassuringly close to civilisation. There’s easy access from the M6 at Junction 36, and you’re only a five-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands railway station. You can walk into Grange-over-Sands in 15 minutes, to source bits and bobs for the barbecue, try out the local pubs and then clear your head by walking along the seafront promenade. The pretty medieval village of Cartmel has indie food shops to nose around and a micro-brewery, as well as a handful of restaurants and takeaways. Drive north towards the Lakes and you’re at Windermere in 20 minutes, for all sorts of water-based activities from sailing to paddleboarding and canoeing. Don’t want to get wet? You can also cross the lake on an old-world cruiser, explore cutesy waterfront villages like Bowness and Ambleside, or get up into the hills for some healthy hiking. Back at site, simple facilities include running water for washing up, and portable toilets. This is a working farm, so while your pet pooches are welcome too, please keep them on a lead and under control at all times. It's also a peaceful place, so there's a no-noise rule in place after 10pm.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: This is a free camping site with just 3 portaloos and a bin, but the view makes up for it! parking up and looking over Morcombe bay was lovely and the people are nice too.

Disliked: A very small sign at the Caravan site entrance down the road could be a bit bigger!

Liked: The view over the sands is amazing. The site is very basic, but clean toilets maintained at least twice a day.

Disliked: To get fresh water was in the next field. I’m lazy.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Had a fantastic week just myself and my son at Low Fell Gate Farm. The view is incredible as well as it being a cracking location. We stopped on the upper end of the field and despite being slightly slanted didn’t cause a problem at all…it was worth the view. The port-a-loos were clean and when I dropped Hannah a message to let her know they needed an extra clean she was there within minutes to give them a wipe over. Hannah was absolutely lovely and a pleasure to deal with. We will definitely return.

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: The view! Just beautiful and the reason we chose this site. Such a big field we had plenty of space, not near anyone. The portaloos were really clean, plenty of loo roll and sanitizer. Nothing to dislike.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: The amazing views over the bay. Cash only but the lady who came for payment was friendly.

Disliked: The field was in fact a steep hill that the ramps for the van wouldn't level us out, so we went to the bottom end which had plenty space due to only 2 others there. The toilets......needless to say I rushed out and vomited at the stench after flushing with what appeared to be stale old urine. Even festivals have cleaner loo's.

Local attractions

Golfers can practise their swing on seafront links or a hilltop course (both five minutes’ drive) with Lakes views. Experienced riders might like the chance to hack across the fells on rare-breed Friesian horses (10 minutes), while horse-lovers of the betting kind can catch race meetings at Cartmel Racecourse. There’s plenty of beach walking on offer too, on the wide expanse of Morecambe Bay’s Silverdale Coast (30 minutes) or Blackstone Point (35 minutes), and you’ll come across salt marshes and woodland trails at Roudsea Wood and Mosses National Nature Reserve (15 minutes). For something a bit more vigorous, The Old Man of Coniston (45 minutes) is a challenging mountain hike rewarded with spectacular views across the Lake District. To up the cultural vibe, there are summer theatre evenings and guided tours at Holker Hall and Gardens (10 minutes), and Grasmere (50 minutes) has several Wordsworth-related attractions and 17th-century cottages owned by the National Trust.
