  • Quiet site on the grounds of a traditional Norfolk inn
  • Walkers’ paradise: 20-minute drive from the start of Fen Rivers Way
  • Half an hour from the beaches of the north Norfolk coast
Sometimes it might feel like you’re living in the beer garden at your local – at the peaceful family-friendly site behind the Anvil Inn, 20 minutes from King’s Lynn in Norfolk, you pretty much are… There’s plenty in the area around the Anvil that should go on your must-see list, but you don’t have to go far to get started – the nearby town of King’s Lynn, 20 minutes from the site, is well worth exploring. Dive into the history of the town at True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum, Stories of Lynn or the Lynn Museum, then experience it in person with a visit to the stunning Red Mount Chapel or Greyfriars Tower. It’s a walker’s paradise too: Roydon Common National Nature Reserve is less than five minutes’ drive from the Anvil and Reffley Wood is a 10-minute drive. In King’s Lynn itself, head to The Walks or follow the Fen Rivers Way the 50 miles to Cambridge. Dogs are welcome on site as long as they’re on-lead, so do bring your four-legged walking buddy along. When you start getting peckish, you won’t have to go far – the inn serves lunch and dinner most days, but if you feel like trying something a little further afield there are loads of other restaurants nearby. No need for designated drivers on this trip either: wash your meal down with a few drinks and knock back some local ales in the Anvil, then toddle the few steps from the inn to your bed.

Local attractions

There are lots of stately homes in this part of the country: Houghton Hall, Peckover House and Garden and Oxburgh Hall are all roughly 30 minutes’ drive from the Anvil. If you’re feeling particularly royal, the museum, house and gardens at Sandringham Estate, the Queen’s country retreat, are less than 10 minutes’ drive away. The spectacular and well-preserved ruins of Castle Acre Priory and Castle Rising are both within 20 minutes of the site – they may be a little less stately, but they’re certainly still worth exploring. If you need a break from your own country retreat, the museums, gardens, theatres, restaurants and shops of Norwich are an hour’s drive away. The stunning university city of Cambridge is an hour and a half from the Anvil if you feel up to travelling a bit further. The Norfolk coast is within easy reach for seaside getaways with the kids – if they’re looking for something more than sea and sand, bring them to Blakeney Point for a seal-spotting boat trip or explore the Pensthorpe Natural Park. Created some budding birdwatchers? Head over to the Snettisham RSPB Nature Reserve to see if you can spot the bar-tailed godwit or the avocet.
