Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, make your way to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for a special stay with a backdrop of one of Yorkshire's (and indeed the UK's) finest country estates. Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival. The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this park has a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups let off a little steam, and it's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room. Though there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here (perhaps looking out for swans and other wildlife), active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails. Day trips to the city of York and the stunning North Yorkshire coastline can certainly be on the cards here too – and rather handily, guests can also claim discounted entrance to Castle Howard itself.

Tyckte om: Convenience of location to Castle Howard with lakeside walk.

Tyckte inte om: Excessive noise from the very early crow activity within the wooded section of the campsite. Also, the lack of privacy around the lakeside gate entrance with several dog walkers disrespecting our pitch and walking and talking very close to our motorhome and slamming the gate in the early hours. I would have at least expected a dedicated path to the gate and away from the motothome pitches.

Tyckte om: All aspects of the campsite was lovely, friendly staff views on an evening was amazing. Facilities on site were clean and very good. If you are looking for a good night camping and places close by to visit I’d recommend this campsite fully.

Tyckte om: Quiet and green park. Wildlife in abundance and access to the Great Lake of Castle Howard. It's seclusion is perfect if you like that sort of thing. The Toilet & shower facilities are Ok clean and tidy.

Tyckte inte om: More information about Fishing the lake would be better, Fishing is available and say's this on the info, however the species are "Limited" to say the least, as far as I could ascertain there is "Only" Pike in the lake ! the price is £7 for your stay ( 1 week ) Plenty of Pike caught, but don't expect to catch other species. Be aware there is NO DIRECT ACCESS to Castle Howard from the Lake Walk. Indeed the only way is via a long walk or short drive along the roadway devoid of a footpath. ( in my opinion not a place to walk children or anyone with mobility issues ) The car park is FREE so go in the car.

Tyckte om: Site was set in the countryside. Reception team very helpful in the office but not seen around the site. First pitch offered very small and then moved to a larger pitch.

Tyckte inte om: Facilities inadequate for the amount of people using them. Old and need updating. Drinking water taps above waste water - unhygienic. 4 toilets and showers for 20 caravans and a 100 tents in the ladies 3 in the mens! Lots of families. Washing up room tiny and badly set out. Had to queue every day. No security at the entrance or exit anyone can just enter the site. Will not use again.

Lokala sevärdheter

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river. Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars). Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
