  • Well-maintained peaceful lakeside site on a farm in Litton Cheney
  • A 15-minute drive to Jurassic Coast beaches; half an hour to Weymouth
  • Café on site, plus lake for swimming and watersports
Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney. The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities). Back at base after any such outings, guests can get some more activity in by launching their paddleboards or kayaks on the lake, taking a dip in the fresh water or simply settling down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip). And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café (open Friday to Sunday) should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away. This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: We loved the site, its in a beautiful spot, has really helpful, friendly staff and has everything you need for a weekend away with little ones. The children loved the lake and the geese and had such a fun time camping for the first time.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: I liked how it was a small personal campsite, in a lovely tucked away area and there was a beautiful lake which you can paddle board in.

Disliked: Could do with more toilet cubicles

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: We stayed for 2 nights as a large group (16 children aged 3-11) and 14 adults! We had a great time, we were allowed to pitch together and had plenty of space to do so, on the level pitch. Staff were on site if needed, and the cafe was lush next to the beautiful lake!

Disliked: Possibly some cleaning products in the toilets, kept up high, just so you can freshen it up after the person before you has been in! An additional toilet and shower would be great, but the 2 of each that are there are more than adequate!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Lovely campsite, very friendly, not all squashed together, basic but good, clean toilet & shower facilities. Rentable fire pits are a bonus as well as SUPs if you don’t have your own. The lake has lots of access points & great for paddle boards, kayaks & swimmers alike, dog & child friendly. Perfect for families as well as groups.

Disliked: Only thing that could be improved on is the cafe menu, a kids meal option would be great as well as something other than sandwiches.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Beautiful lake setting, dog friendly. On site manager friendly and helpful.

Disliked: There are better sites for young children as no free space for play when all the pitches full and got to be super careful around the lake.

Liked: Everything, we booked the night before and for that much sort notice price was more than reasonable. It was great we hired a paddle board for the beautiful lake, walked around the grounds and had a nice calm nights sleep. Really lovely hot showers and clean toilets was so perfect.

Disliked: We didn’t get to use the cafe as was shut on our visit

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Camping pitches were spacious. Lake was great for swimming.

Disliked: Only 2 showers and 3 toilets for total campsite. Both didn't appear to be cleaned regularly. Ran out of loo rolls in one. This was a mid week booking.

Local attractions

Need a tipple to top off your evening by the lake? Take a 10-minute walk along to the village’s very own vineyard, Bride Valley Vineyard, for tours, tastings and a bottle or two to sip while the sun goes down. (If you’re more of a beer drinker, you’ll need to take the 15-minute drive to Palmers Brewery, which also runs excellent tours.) Time for the beach? Take your pick from the scenic offerings of West Bay and Burton Bradstock (both 15 minutes’ drive) and the 18-mile shingle stretch at Chesil Beach (half an hour), or head off to Weymouth (half an hour) to see the Sandworld sand sculptures and ogle the underwater beasts at the Sea Life Centre. Away from the coast, top days out might take you to Abbotsbury Swannery and gardens (20 minutes) or to explore the Teddy Bear Museum, Dinosaur Museum and Maiden Castle Iron Age fort in Dorchester (half an hour).
