  • Rural site an hour's drive from Rehoboth and two hours from Windhoek
  • Wildlife viewing from 3km walking trail or on game drives
  • Swimming pool, restaurant, bar and braai area
The neighbours can be pretty wild around here – but then it’s likely that’s what you came to these parts for. So pull up a chair in the lapa (open courtyard) and gaze out over the lake to see what you can spot: there’s usually a variety of bird life nesting nearby, and animals passing by for a drink. Or maybe you’d prefer to stride forth on the walking trail in search of the wildlife – monkeys, giraffes, springbok and wildebeest are among the beasties that have been spotted on the paths around Paradise Rest Camp, a peaceful rural site just under an hour’s drive from the town of Rehoboth. There’s plenty of space to relax around the site, with an outdoor swimming pool for cooling off and lots of spots for sunbathing or chilling out in the shade of the trees. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be ordered at the restaurant, or guests can buy firewood to grill their own goodies at the braai area. There’s a grocery store on site for all the necessaries, and a bar that can supply you with pre- or post-dinner cool drinks. Wild and remote this place may be, but it’s far from basic: the well-kept toilet blocks at Paradise Rest Camp have proper flushing loos and hot showers, and there’s a wifi connection to help you keep in touch with the rest of the world.

Local attractions

The main draw here is, of course, the wildlife viewing. Take a wander on the three-kilometre walking trail or have a word with site staff to organise game drives that also take in a visit to a baobab tree that’s said to be more than 2,500 years old. To get to grips with the country’s culture a bit more, take a trip over to Rehoboth, around an hour’s drive away, where the Rehoboth Museum charts the area’s people, geology and nature. The town’s also got a thermal resort where you can wallow in natural hot springs (as locals have done since the early 19th century). Another fine place to chill out nearby is Lake Oanob, also around an hour’s drive from camp, where you can take boat trips, go fishing or poke around at your own pace by hiring canoes or aqua bikes.
