  • Family-friendly back to basics site in rural Northumberland
  • A five-minute drive to Heddon-on-the-Wall and Hadrian's Wall
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; historic pubs and alpaca farm nearby
Dubbed Hadrian’s Wall country, this was once the land of the Romans. It's hard to imagine the world of crossbows and armour now, but timeworn battlements, fortresses, and ramparts will help you to travel back in time… In the Northumberland countryside, close to the ancient Hadrian’s Wall (could this be the longest UNESCO World Heritage Site, at 75 miles long?), Pitch on the Wall Campsite is a small, family-friendly site smack bang in the middle of Hadrian’s Wall country. Within 15 minutes’ drive of Newcastle upon Tyne and five minutes from the historic town of Heddon-on-the-Wall, this is a fine base to conquer the country Roman-style, explore its networking of hiking and cycling routes, or chase through the sloping countryside, using the wall as your guide. This a back to basics site with just running water and portable toilets, so it's a real rural Northumberland experience. It wouldn’t be right to let your pooch miss out on all this greenery, so dogs are welcome too, and noise is kept to a minimum after 11pm so you can stock up on your snoozing for another day spent out exploring. You'll be able to keep warm of an evening as campfires are allowed on site (grab a firepit on site before they all go…) with wood available for purchase. Pub grub and wholesome meals are served at several pubs and cafes with a five-minute drive, but you may prefer to pull out all the stops for a family barbecue on site. Grab all the extra buns and bits for the grill at several shops five minutes away, or simply sign up for food shopping delivered through your tent flap on site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: With widely open space for kids to play. Enough distance between pitch and friendly staffs to assist. Reasonable admission fee. Movable toilet is good, can't complain.

Disliked: Little bit far away and less number of water tap, preferable more. Driveway too muddy for vehicles crossing the entrance, easier to get stuck.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The general location is good not too far out. The toilets are generally quite clean and there’s enough space for everyone to camp.

Disliked: It was completely circumstantial, however when and where we camped overnight the ground became entirely waterlogged and it took over our gazebo. When we woke in the morning it was like stepping straight into a puddle and as the gazebo fell down one of the poles had snapped breaking it. The area near the wayer pump turned into a complete bog overnight and we were all soaked.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very nice little site, tucked away from most of the hustle and bustle. Short walk to the Lion and Lamb pub, and another pub a 5 minute drive the opposite way. Great to go and chill out with a few friends, and everything is excellently priced, including the braziers and firewood - I’ve highly recommended the place to others I know

Disliked: Site was flooded upon arrival and rained all night - but not your fault, can’t help the rain!

Liked: Flat pitches, mowed grass, water and portaloo toilets provided, secluded location close to the Hadrian’s Wall path

Disliked: Very little platform around the water tap so the area was muddy

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Not too far off the trail, easy enough to find and plenty of space

Disliked: I would've like there to be at least a few picnic benches, I stayed on similar grounds (e.g. farm paddocks) and had benches to eat and cook on.

Local attractions

For rural explores, wander right into the farmlands from the site, join the Hadrian’s Wall at Heddon-on-the-wall (five minutes' drive), or feed the grinning alpacas at the nearby alpaca farm (five minutes). Those who prefer to travel on two wheels can hire a bike locally, glide alongside the river at Riverside Country Park (five minutes) or tackle England's largest forest in the west, Kielder Forest, where you'll need to pedal harder and faster to catch up with wriggling red squirrels and soaring ospreys overhead. History follows you everywhere you go in this area, whether it's Hadrian's wall (five minutes), the many historical beamed pubs or the birthplace of 'the father of the railways', George Stephenson’s cottage (five minutes). For a sandier day out, visit the craggy headlands of Tynemouth (35 minutes), whip out your bodyboard for Long Sands Beach, or raise your spears for action behind the battlements of the clifftop castle overlooking the beach.
