Never been to the Navarra region? Then it’s highly recommended that you navigate to this scenic chunk of northern Spain with haste, and nab a spot at family-friendly Camping Arbizu. This chilled-out site five minutes’ drive from Arbizu village is an equally fab spot for first-timers and frequent visitors, especially those with an eye on eco credentials: all common areas and buildings are designed to be eco friendly. There are courses and workshops for anyone who wants to learn more about sustainability trends, and swims in the saline pool, yoga in the activity centre and kayak paddles in the naturalised lake are among the eco-tinged activities. Want to see more of the scenery that’s inspired such protectiveness? The site’s midway between Urbasa-Andia and Aralar natural parks, so there are plenty of hiking, biking and riding trails hereabouts. Stick to the minimal carbon footprint by hiring a bike on site for adventuring, or get behind the wheel for a 10-minute drive to either park, then head to the edge of Urbasa to see the area from the sky in a paraglider. Prefer to get those thrills in a less death-defying way? Get serotonin pumping with time at the outdoor gym or with a game of something energetic in the sports zone before the biggest thrill of all: dinner time. There’s a bar-restaurant for eats without the effort, and a small supermarket on site carries organic products from local producers when the self-catered option beckons.

Hankering after a hike? Take to the trails of Urbasa-Andia Natural Park or Aralar Natural Park, both of which are about a 10-minute drive away and have stuck up plenty of signposts to keep you on the prescribed path. Local activity centres can also help you saddle up to see the scenery from horseback or fling yourself from a mountainside in a paraglider. For those that prefer underground adventures, the Mendukilo caves are 25 minutes away by car. Back down at ground level, get that real rural vibe at Albi Gaztak (five minutes’ drive), where you can tour the cheese factory, sample its wares and watch sheepdog demonstrations. And what goes well with cheese? Why, wine of course – seek out a bottle to sip with your fine morsels at organic Bodegas Lezaun (35 minutes). Ready for a bit of city action? Pop over to Pamplona with half an hour’s drive, or set forth for the seaside city of San Sebastián, an hour away, for sandy beaches, boat trips, arty galleries and foodie treats picking at pinxtos in the bars.
