Board sports meet beaches meet bold street-style art at Urban Art Camping in the Leiria seaside village of Ferrel, 15 minutes’ drive from Peniche – a place that’s well known among surfers for its excellent waves.
This is a cracking spot for seasoned surfing pros, naturally, but it’s equally welcoming for dabblers, complete novices and those whose heart lies with different board sports. Surf kit can be hired on site, with lessons available just down the road if you need them; if you’re not up for surfing at all, instead ask about hiring all the kit you’ll need for a day of paddleboarding or bodyboarding.
There’s nothing to say you simply have to get involved in watersports at all if you don’t fancy it – maybe hire bikes or scooters instead for a jaunt around local coast and countryside, organise a game of something at the multisports court or let the kids run loose at the play area. Or of course, you could just hit the beach: it’s a 15-minute walk to the nearest, Almagreira, or a half-hour stroll/five-minute drive to super-sized Baleal beach.
Whatever you select for your day’s activities, you can finish it off back at base with a stroll through the well-kept gardens and a glass of local vinho at the site’s bar. If you’ve got chores to complete, get them sorted with the site’s wifi connection, washing-up space and laundry area.

Not content with checking out just the one coastal corner? Quite right too – there are heaps of fine places to hang out along this cracking stretch of coastline. Start with a 15-minute drive to Peniche for a wander around its headland, which is well supplied with splendid vistas from its many viewpoints and lighthouses.
Beyond that, venture up to Foz do Arelho (half an hour’s drive) for fishing and windsurfing from a wide sandy beach, or hop on a boat trip to the wildlife-packed Berlengas archipelago for hikes, birdwatching, snorkelling and glass-bottomed boat trips. Boats take about 45 minutes to make the crossing, from a harbour 15 minutes’ drive away.
If you’ve got the tiddlers to entertain, think about taking them off to Dino Parque (15 minutes) or the Bambilocas educational farm (25 minutes). Day trips of a more grownup persuasion might involve outings to Lisbon (an hour and 15 minutes away) or historic Coimbra (an hour and a half).
