Back on the mainland and away from car-free Tavira Island is the town of Tavira (10 minutes’ drive). In the historic town centre, there is a Moorish castle where many climb the walls for gorgeous views, along with scenic cobbled streets and lots of restaurants, shops and coffee shops. Continue your tour with a visit to Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo, a 13th-century church built on the site of a former mosque, or a more in-depth look at the town's history in the Islamic Museum. Some nice activities for later in the day include the traditional Fado music shows at Fado com História or walks over Pte. Romana, a pretty pedestrian bridge over the Gilão river. A little outside of Tavira – and considered ‘hidden’ by many – is Cascata do Pego do Inferno (20 minutes), a waterfall and natural pool surrounded by the typical lush greenery you'd expect from the region of Faro.
