As well as fishing, boating and cycling direct from the pitches, sporting activities on offer nearby include ice skating at the Elfstedenhal rink (10 minutes’ drive), mini golf at Het Buiten-Land Pitch & Putt (15 minutes), and a leafy golf course set around lakes (25 minutes). There’s also a swimming pool in Stiens (15 minutes) for any rainy-day distractions. Still looking for more outdoor activity? Go hiking along the boardwalks in De Alde Feanen National Park (20 minutes), where you have a chance to see white storks nesting. Alternatively, get your dose of culture by touring traditional wooden Friesland cottages and farm buildings at De Spitkeet open-air museum (half an hour). Leeuwarden (20 minutes by bike) has more than its fair share of historic buildings to admire, as well as art collections in the Princessehof and Fries museums, and street murals throughout the city – there’s a self-guided tour map for the latter. If all that sounds like hard work, rent an electric boat to putter around the canals or head to a waterside café for pancakes and coffee.
