Heading for Sardinia with the family? Then pitch up at Nuraghe Ruiu Campeggio Villaggio, set among trees 10 minutes’ drive from Norbello in rural Oristano. Why? Because it’s a peaceful, welcoming and kid-centric base surrounded by stunning greenery and offering numerous opportunities for adventure and sport.
Pitches vary in size and are tucked among the trees for cooling shade; handy amenities include electric hook-ups, drinking water fountains, a launderette and a modern shower block with plenty of hot water.
Around this verdant site is a swimming complex with a splash pool and a sun deck for topping up the tan, a shaded playground for younger offspring and a games area with ping-pong tables and darts. While barbecues are allowed, you can dodge any cooking by heading for the informal restaurant – they do takeaways too – with a shaded terrace and a bar that serves a decent selection of draught beer.
Dogs are very welcome here too, and they have their own dedicated shower and paddling pool. And just so life on site can stay completely peaceful, the owners ask that hours of silence be observed between 1pm–3pm and 11pm–7am.

Anyone wanting to stay active on their Sardinia break can safely go running and cycling on quiet rural lanes around Nuraghe Ruiu; if you’re uncertain about routes, ask at the on-site Activity Point. There’s also an 18-hole golf course (45 minutes’ drive) set in stunning landscapes, or you can take the family on kayaking and dinghy sailing expeditions around Lake Omedeo (half an hour).
Sneak a little culture into your holiday mix with a visit to Fordongianus Roman Baths (25 minutes). Part of this complex is in magnificent ruins, but you can take to the naturally heated thermal waters at two spas that have been active for more than 2,000 years or have a cooling dip in the River Tirso nearby.
If it’s a day on the Mediterranean coastline that the kids are demanding, then head for Spiaggia di Santa Caterina di Pittinuri, a slender crescent of sand popular for surfing – there’s board hire on the beach and a couple of bars. Another option is the quiet stretch at Is Benas (both 45 minutes), which is handily dog-friendly if the family mutt is coming along for the ride too; there are no services so bring water and a picnic.
